We are negotiating. Most people expect the outcome that was forecast at the outset. Hence the hard lining of positions both in Europe and within the UK.

Are we? Johnson seems to be making a big play of it for the people at home, but doesn't seem to be actually trying any negotiating with the EU.
He hasn't provided any new proposals, or any new backstop alternatives.

    What's that? That we'll cave?

There hasn't been any hard lining of the EU position, it's been firm but utterly consistent from the start.
There hasn't been a position from the UK yet, at all. The EU are still somewhat unable to negotiate because we still don't know what we want.

Boris is only pretending to negotiate, we all know that is true.

Even if that doesn't help your argument.

Positions on the backstop seem somewhat polarised, not sure how we negotiate that as there don’t appear to be tons of solutions as Boris claimed.

The only solution I can see is WA getting through as some switch due to fear of no deal (or revocation).
  • Can it really be true that Johnson hasn't put any of his alternatives to the backstop in writing to the EU?

If so we may as well still have David Davis negotiating armed with nothing more than a stupid grin on his face.

    Boris: There's no press here

The sound of photographers taking photos is clearly heard in the back ground of the video.

By EU standards only pretending to negotiate is in fact a legitimate negotiating tactic.

By your perceived EU standards. They actually seem to be quite good at negotiating. It must come from their desire to avoid war at all costs, they've had to learn to compromise.

We don't share the same qualities.

I wonder if you confuse between "pretending to negotiate" and "not rolling over to our every whim".

That only shows me that the EU don't like being on the back foot, that they don't know what the other side's tactics are.
I don't know what Boris's tactics are either but if it's getting the EU this worked-up I'm happy.
