    Hi @E.ON_Company_Representative:_Malc
Considering switching from SSE to E.ON using the current v28 on offer on uswitch BUT it says smart meter may loose some functionality and it will no longer send readings back etc.  I have a SMETS2 smart meter, could you confirm you can handle SMETS2 meters and the readings will be sent back to E.ON and the IHD display will continue to show details as it currently does or do i need a E.ON IHD?

Also, when I initiate the switch, do I get to choose a date the switch happens or will I just be informed of a date?  Reason being my current contract ends 25th March and I was hoping to get my new contract to start on the same date so that next year I can look to get both my Gas 7 elec on a Dual fuel as I've noticed recently they are quiet competitive whereas previously there were not hence taking separate suppliers but I've notice my current gas suppliers prices are steadily rising it seems.
Does it still take approx 3 weeks to switch? If so i might have to wait until i'm 3 weeks away to get it moved at a date very close to 25th March.
    Thanks
    Kev
Hello Kev and thanks for your interest in joining us.
SMETS2 smart meters retain their smart features following a change of supplier. Similarly, the In Home Display (IHD) will continue to work. You won't need a new IHD.
There might be a bit if a delay immediately after the switch whilst the meter, IHD and the Data Communications Company (DCC) are updated with the new data. The DCC provides the communications infrastructure that handles the UK's smart meter data. Once these updates are done, SMETS2 meters will continue as before.
A change of supplier usually completes in about two and half weeks. It's not possible to choose a start date as this is something we'll let you know once the switch is underway.
Hope this helps Kev. Please let me know if you need any more details and thanks again for your interest in joining us.

I want a smart meter from Eon but can't have one because I have a BG smart meter that became dumb when I switched to Eon and Eon won't change mine because it might become smart in the not too distant future.
Hello st999 and we're planning to have existing SMETS1 smart meters upgraded by the end of the year so they can be managed in the same way as SMETS2. These include those fitted by other companies and now supplied by us. Upgrades are done remotely so there's no need to visit your property and we'll write to let you know once it's been done.
There are a few early smart meter installations (mainly from 2014 and before) where this won't be possible. In these cases, we'll offer to fit a new SMETS2 meter.
Hope this is of interest st999.

  • No doubt Malc is in a better position to confirm, but as of Fix Online v36, the T&C explicitly state that one agrees to have a smart meter installed. Clause 11.1:

    https://www.eonenergy.com/-/media/downloads/residential/tariffs/2020/q1/fix-online-revised.pdf?la=en

    - with this tariff you agree to the installation of a smart meter, where eligible. You are still eligible for this tariff if you currently have a smart meter installed or your property is currently ineligible for a smart meter.

Hello oliverbrown and, I can confirm, the T&Cs on our latest tariffs have changed.
They now explicitly make agreeing to have smart meters a condition of the tariff provided the property is eligible. Where properties aren't eligible or where smart meters are already in place, customers can still have these tariffs.
As well as Fix Online v36, the new T&Cs apply to all tariffs currently on sale through our website and the Price Comparison sites with the exception of our standard Energy Plan tariff.
Nothing has changed for customers on earlier tariffs with the clause (11.1) agreeing only to be contacted about smart meters. Customers on these tariffs can continue to refuse smart meters and stay on the tariff.
Hope this explains oliverbrown. Please let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

    Hi Malc,

Thanks for confirming, although obviously it's not a change I welcome. I still have a few months left on my older Fix Online tariff after which I'll consider my options.

As ever I appreciate all the support you provide here.
  • I joined eon in December 2019 on v21.
I am being harassed by eon to fit a smart meter, they say I'd agreed to it. I've tried searching this forum but can only find you stating that v21 was withdrawn overnight some time in the middle of 2019 which is doubly confusing. Please can you confirm for me that I am not obliged to have a smart meter fitted.

I'm on v21 too. Malc has stated we are allowed to turn down smart meters and stay on the tariff. He also said the frequency of communication is being reviewed, in my opinion customers like us should not be harassed as we did not agree to have smart meters fitted (the letter lies).

Also are you sure you're on Fix Online v21 and not another package? I joined it in July 2019 so I doubt you went on Fix Online v21 in December 2019.
