EON Smart Meters

I must admit despite having a reasonably (apparently) tech mindset, I'm very slightly wary in general of remote firmware upgrade to change them from '1' to '2' , I realise there's backup capability and likely some permanence (same with server's with multiple bios's) where there's a fraction that cannot be remotely overwritten so there is *always* a recovery pathway open if things go pear shaped.
My concern is simply with potential issues that could arise. I'm slightly alarmed if the update will be without notice and "silent" actually. Then again perhaps some minor updates have already happened.
^ The above is general and not aimed at EON in particular by any means.
Hello AndyCF and, as thorganby says, SMETS1 meters won't become SMETS2. The upgrade I've mentioned will allow SMETS1 meters to keep their smart functionality following a change of supplier.
This is an industry wide project known as 'Enrolment and Adoption'. It has two objectives.
To move SMETS1 meters on to the central network (Data Communications Company or DCC) so they keep their smart capability following a change of supplier. Secondly, to reinstate smart features for customers who have switched to us with smart meters fitted by another supplier. This also includes customers who left us and have since returned.
With the latter, we'll contact customers to let them know when the upgrade has been done. For the former, these meters have been smart compliant continuously since installation. As these customers won't see any difference, we don't plan to contact them.
Hope this explains AndyCF.

Do smart meters implement a specific Economy 7 hours pattern? My current old-style meter pattern is rather unusual and very convenient to me (23:30-1:30 and 3:30-8:30). Unless a provider can install a smart meter with the same pattern, I will always object.
Hello glocal and this depends on the circumstances at individual properties.
Generally, changing from classic to smart Economy 7 meters won't affect the switching times. This isn't universal as I am aware of instances where a change does happen. I certainly can't say definitely that there'll be no impact. It's best to check with our smart teams before booking an appointment.
Sorry to be vague glocal.

Thanks, Malc. My understanding is that switching times are determined by the meter itself. Different apartments in the same block with the same provider and the same type of E7 meters may switch at different times depending on how they were programmed before installation. To follow my current E7 times pattern, a new classic or smart meter will have to be programmed to switch at the same unusual times as now. I will be very surprised if a provider commits to accommodating different patterns for different apartments in a block, but I'll ask.0 -

MalcYes it explains well enough.

Hello C.C. and sorry your mum has switched away.
The information on the In Home Display (IHD) will depend on which type your mum has. We've used several different types of IHD over the years. Some show the gas in kWh whilst others display it in cubic metres.
If it is in kWh, this will only be an approximation as the Calorific Value can change. It's always best to take readings directly from the meter. Totally understand, this isn't practical for your mum.
We'll begin to update many of the SMETS1 meters we're responsible for soon. This will restore a lot of the original smart features including the ability to send us readings automatically. We'll also do this where smart meters were installed by another supplier and where we're now the supplier. I suspect other suppliers have similar plans although can't say for sure.
Sorry this is a bit vague C.C.

Thanks for answering, Malc
After posting here, i had a webchat with an E-on agent and was told that the home display can't be showing kw/h, as that simply isn't possible. It was suggested that it was probably malfunctioning now she has changed supplier!
However, Mum's meters were changed yesterday by her new supplier, and my suspicions were confirmed - the display was definitely showing gas usage in kw/h,
It was reassuring to read your reply today and see that some E-on employees are more clued up.0 -

Thanks for that C.C. Glad my post was reassuring. Hope the installation went well.

I have a Landis and Gyr G470 671 and an E470 from a previous supplier. How far away are they from regaining there smart functionality as I have just got the text asking me if I want smart meters installed.

Hello Mike and welcome to the Forums.
We're trialling updates to SMETS1 meters now. We're looking to start rolling out updates to customers whose meters have lost their smart features, including those fitted by another company and now supplied by us, within the next couple of months. Given the number of meters involved, the roll-out is expected to run through to December 2020.
Updates are done remotely and we'll be in touch with customers once we've made their meters smart again.
Hope this explains Mike.

Had a SMETS2 meter installed by Scottish Power back in May 2019 which worked fine until I switched supplier to E.On at the end of June 2019 when the IHD showed info for electricity but nothing for gas.
I've also had ONLY estimated bills from E.On for both Elect & Gas from the start, even though these so-called Smart Meters are supposed to send my energy usage directly to E.On.
So I complained to E.On with little success. I raised a Resolver issue with them on 1st Sept and they still haven't fixed the problem. So,I looked at the gas meter today and it says Uniflo G4SZV-1 SMETS2 (Property of Scottish Power). Could this be the key to the problem?
So far I've been very unimpressed with the switch to Smart-meters as I've wasted far more time chasing energy suppliers than I ever did sending meter-readings. I think they are very over-rated!0
