  • Thanks LL, Wednesday and maman:D
I wore perfume!! :j and it does make you feel better ;):D
I've got the weekend with just dh and I, very much looking forward to it! I'm going to do a face and hair mask, a nice walk later then home to an open fire and a glass of sparkly :D

Morning routines are important to me- if I do things right from the start of the day, I tend to stick with it for the rest of it - so I've decided that I will start doing a 15 minute yoga routine in the mornings from Monday- they do some on YouTube so I can just pop the TV on first thing and do it while dh is in the shower ;) my plan is that I'll do the yoga, do my housework then shower and fab prior to starting my day :D

I've currently got an ear infection so can't get my hair sorted until it's cleared - must go to the doctors(I hate going :() as I've left it for ages and it's not disappearing so time I did something constructive. Once that is sorted I will book an appointment- my hair is such a mess - it's incredibly think, coarse and entirely uncontrollable:rotfl: I'm going to get it dyed and get a really good cut - I've concluded that I am going to have to commit some time daily to maintain my hair - until I do, I'm always going to look like a banshee!! :rotfl:

Does anybody have a style or person/character that they would love to emulate? I've been thinking about what I actually want to achieve and I've got two tv characters that I think always present beautifully - Karen from Will & Grace and Cam Soroyan from Bones - Karen is always tastefully made up and Cam is always fabulously dressed! While I'm not expecting miracles, I'd love to be able to look half as classy as them - not overdone, not desperately trying to look younger than they are - just smart and effortlessly elegant. I currently have Karen's drinking habits but that's about it!! :rotfl: oh well, who knows - perhaps in 12 months I'll be on the road to being almost human ;)

Well done on the poetry reading sugar!! :T

    Good morning lovely ladies.

Brrrr it's a cold one, currently -2 and freezing fog. Better than all that rain though. And the hoare frost looks very pretty. If the fog clears I shall drive to Asda, if not I'll walk to the local co op. I am aiming to walk more but I am a bit scared of slipping on the ice so I was thinking of getting those shoe gripper thingies you can get. Has anyone ever tried them.

Squirrel.....Sorry to hear about your ear infection, my DIL has had one this week. Not nice, hope you get it sorted soon. Sounds like you've made a good start.

Re inspiration......we have had a few chats about this...it's a good idea to look at people in the public eye or even people in the street to get ideas. Obviously not to copy them blindly but yes definitely try to analyse what it is about them you like and then see if you can adapt their style to suit you.

I think i must be a bit of a chameleon because throughout my life I have been told I resemble several different famous faces......starting as a teen when I was told I looked like the Mona Lisa..:rotfl:

I have been likened to Ruth from Pans People (remember them), Cathy McGowan from Ready Steady Go, Cher, Cilla Black, Sophia Loren, Claudia Cardinale, Elizabeth Taylor and now apparently Helen Mirren. Not a bad Roll call. :rotfl:

As for my "style" in clothes well I tend to go for simple lines, no frills or flounces, no patterns, pleats or gathers, no bulky box cuts. I like good tailoring and like well fitting, well cut clothes to provide a long lean look. It's a way I learned to dress when I was overweight, because it did help me look slimmer.

If you google the best dressed women lists you should get some ideas. My style icons as far as clothes are concerned are Jackie Onassis, Katherine Hepburn, Rene Rousso, sometimes Princess Diana (more so after her divorce when she started to dress more simply).

Some of the current ones I like are Cate Blanchette, Nicole Kidman. They are both very slender but I think Kate Winslett can look fantastic and that she is a very good example of how a more curvy figure can look sensational.

Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge is often on these lists but although she always looks lovely and "dresses for job" I think she can dress a bit too old sometimes. To be fair though I think she probably has to follow royal protocols and always make sure that she is "ladylike" and never appear too ostentatious or overtly sexy. She has a hard job to always look right but I think she does it very well. It must be very difficult to retain that level of perfection,

Which brings me to your comment about "effortless elegance".

Alas there is no such thing......the trick is to make it look effortless. :rotfl:

LL - got it in one, efforless elegance is anything but!
Squirrelgirl - good on you for identifying that you are better if you start off the day in the right frame of mind. I think most of us have found starting is OK but continuing is the bu**er!
On that note, I'm off to wash my hair as I'm in Phyllis Diller mode lol
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

    Hi all

I decided I was going to join a local SW group and went to the local one

So the leader spent half hour giving me the speil, and it all sounded great - and gave me the enrolment form to fill in, whilst she started the main group

The main group started and her first announcement was that this group was merging with another one, a daytime group several miles away. This is no good for me, and I wish she had said this before wasting both our time

    So I left

But I do really like the philosopy so I brought myself a starter kit off ebay and have been following it at home

    4lbs lost already. Really pleased.

Would like to get back to my wedding weight if I could, or near enough
The opposite of what you know...is also true
  • Hmm, I don't really follow famous people and their fashion. I've been told in the past that I look like Kate Winslett, Martine McCutcheon and Christina Ricci. Weird as none of them look like me. Or each other, haha.:rotfl: I used to dye my hair all sorts of different colours back then. I used to live near a theatre and I remember men in a local shop asking me if I was working as an actress there as I changed my look so much.:D

I've had my natural red/ blonde/brown hair for years now, though.

I had a lovely time last night. I had a nice meal and then the Liam Gallagher concert was really good as well. I drank far too much beer, though.:rotfl:

I wore a totally different outfit than I was planning as it was so cold. My navy short dress with my black thermal top underneath and a blue cardigan on top and then my black coat. It was seriously cold. I did notice the police presence at the stations after what happened yesterday but I wasn't going to let that loser stop me from having a good time going out in London. There was a great atmosphere at the gig.:)

Well done on the weightloss. :TThat's not good to not even mention the merger of groups ska lover but at least she will have explained the gist of how the SW plan works.

There's a good SW thread on here and we have a number of people who don't go to group for various reasons but we always recommend that they go to a group once and hear the talk and get the books which you've done.:D

You'd be very welcome to join in and ask any questions you have or for syn values. :)

I hope your ear clears up soon squirrel. You'll feel so much better when you get your hair done. I have high maintenance hair that only looks good if I take time to blow dry it. I envy people with wash and go hair.:(

I'm off out to football shortly. Our match doesn't start until 5.30 p.m. I hate it when Sky messes the kick off times around. I think I'll wear my quilted coat again. If it was warm enough for Amsterdam it'll be OK here. :)

I bought myself another thermal vest yesterday. I was in Matalan and I saw a black one with gold sparkles. My plan is to 'tailor' it by hand hemming the neckline to hide the zig zag gold stitching and then I'm going to wear it as an evening top or for layering.

It's been dry and bright here all day but probably get colder as it gets dark.
  • Totally agree that it's not effortless, just love the fact they make it look that way! ;) Just found out that the actress from Bones wears mainly Karen Millen  she's my favourite designer so no surprises there!! :rotfl:
I'm actually not into clothes, handbags, shoes or shopping but I have a very specific taste and her designs generally match it - I also love the plain black louboutin shoes....I have expensive taste!! :wall: :rotfl: I don't and never have owned anything by either of those designers but it's definitely where my preferences lead - if only I was a slender 6ft supermodel rather than a short frazzled middle aged woman, I might be tempted to shell out that sort of money! ;)
Well, I haven't done the masks etc...got as far as the open fire, put an opera on and am now just enjoying my Saturday - I've got plenty of time later to do my masks etc so I'm just living in the moment :D
I did good on lunch - I made a chickpea and veg curry which I had with yoghurt and mint raita, hm flatbreads, papaya and mango salsa topped off with sliced avocado.....all nice and healthy plus the curry was made from leftovers so no food is being wasted :D
Going to start on some alcohol free days from Monday plus increase my water intake - I'm getting there one thing at a time ;)

Excellent news on the weight loss ska! :T really annoying that they didn’t give you that info from the start but worth doing - my dd lost 5 stones in around 18 months and has now been maintaining for months:D I'm so proud of her and she feels a lot better :j

Drink lots of water - it’s free and will keep you healthy and fab. Get yourself a funky aluminium water bottle so you can keep hydrated whilst out and about.

    . . ..

Began at the beginning of the thread and found this.

I was listening to a consultant urologist the other day who said he thought people were now drinking too much!

His view was that the body has a way of telling you when you need to drink - thirst. He suggested that, except for some special medical conditions, one should just rely on that rather than carrying round a bottle of water and sipping from it frequently.

There must be a balance somewhere.

Interesting, although I have also read that by the time you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated.....so I wonder which is right.

I think a good guideline is the colour of urine. It should be a pale wheat colour. The darker it is, the more concentrated it is and therefore your body might be in need of fluids.

There are colour charts (yes honestly) on the NHS websites so it's easy enough to check.

Well done on the weight loss, Ska. Great start.

I've had a productive day, and just had a lovely early dinner. Time to curl up on the sofa, coffee, chocolate, a newspaper and then maybe a film.

    Have a lovely week end......
