Thanks, I thought you probably needed a prescription or something. I might get one just to try and work out what goes on. My blue lips and shaking hands do tell me I need sugar but it would be nice not to get to that stage.0 -
Humpty.......If you need to learn more then I can recommend a book called The Blood Sugar diet by Dr Michael Moseley.
I know you are naturally slender and sometimes struggle to gain weight but apparently you can be a skinny mini and still have issues with blood sugar levels that fluctuate too much.
It might be worth talking to your GP though, just in case. Blue lips and shaking hands do sound extreme and they might be a signifier that there could be something else going on and not "just" fluctuating glucose levels, although they can be serious and lead to hypos if levels get too low.
I had a couple of incidents, always in the afternoon, where I felt very strange, lightheaded and shaky. Tested my blood and the levels, whilst slightly on the low side, were still within an acceptable normal range. Now that my levels are coming back down I haven't had any similar problems. I think it may have been down to the wrong food choices for lunch.
I think the trick is to avoid sugar rushes and insulin spikes. It's the spikes that cause the trouble, because they are usually followed by a crash. The aim is to keep levels as stable as possible. And this is where food plays a significant role.
It can be a bit of a juggling act but I have found that being able to do my own monitoring at home has been very useful at helping me to work out which foods were causing the worst spikes. Through testing and monitoring I discovered that I am very carb sensitive, not just the obvious sugary carbs but also the starchy ones like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes.
It's a learning curve.0 -
I suppose we all just accept our own "normal" but the first time I realised something was a bit off was when I had my first baby. I was taken in to hospital the night before I was due to be induced. I had the evening meal, the hot chocolate and a biscuit and then a full breakfast. My labour was started and a couple of hours later I was transferred to the labour ward. When they did tests, can't remember if it was blood or urine, the sister told me off for not eating properly, I was a target for being irresponsible as I was a teenager. I told her I had eaten and she was quite rude about not believing me and said it was obvious I hadn't eaten properly for over 24 hrs . I told her I had been on the ward and what I had eaten and she phoned the ward to check as she said it was unbelievable that 3 or 4 hours after cereal, toast, bacon and egg I should be low. Well the ward confirmed what I had eaten and she was incredulous and I needed IV glucose. In fact I needed glucose with all my labours.
I've realised from early teens that I always need something like a boiled sweet in my pocket in case I have to go too long between meals, a friend with diabetes does the same in case she has a hypo. In the old days when we had to fast from the previous day for Holy Communion I would always get into trouble for being faint or actually fainting so even at primary school it was an issue. The joke at home was always that if there was a famine I wouldn't survive day one.
I manage by eating 3 meals and 3 snacks a day, my meals are small but if I tried to have 3 larger meals and no snacks then it wouldn't work. My snack might be something like a slice of toast or a couple of plain biscuits so nothing huge.
I'm off to doctors this morning due to have an ECG and some blood tests so it is all good fun. I have a friend who is a dietician in the NHS so I might ask her for some ideas.0 -
Morning all - just caught up with the thread and all the posts as I've been MIA over the Easter break.

I've not done much fabbing over the last few days other than slap on suncream! Friday my DS1 and I went to an architectural garden centre that was about 20 miles away. We made a day of it with a pub lunch. Glorious day and the countryside was stunning. The centre's trees and shrubs are all topiaried into various shapes - think 10ft standard wisterias, cloud clipped conifers etc. They were stunning but a wandered round saying HOW MUCH!!!! Average prices were in the 2-3k mark - a yew tree was 10k! I did see some small pots of Arum Lillie's for £25! Made me realise how much some of my garden plants could be worth lol!
Saturday DH & I went to a friend's 60th birthday party, smashing evening and I wore .........my jumpsuit
Sunday DS1 and I took my boat out for her first trip of the season - didn't go too far, just anchored across the other side of the harbour, three other boats rafted alongside us and much merriment ensued for a few hours until we went back to the pontoon at our club.
Monday the club were holding a jumble to raise funds for the children's section - it helps to pay for equipment and training to get littlies on the water. DS1 and I did galley duty making bacon butties, teas and coffees. We actually ran out of bacon but made a substantial amount for the fund - I was shattered!
Yesterday my DS2 had a hospital appointment for some injections into his spine so DH & I took him. We knew it would take about 3/4 hours so we had lunch out (Prezzo but not impressed) and the town had a big Sainsbugs so I got my pink denim jacketand two pairs of crops - one navy and one fuchsia pink - happy bunny!
Cooler here today, no rain yet so I need to get my veg planting done - DH went for a run on his trike on Monday to a big bike meet and bought me a pack of a dozen industrial orange gloves with black rubber palms and fingers - I think he got fed up with me moaning about my nails so I'd better make sure I wear them.......very fetching !

Good morning lovely ladies.
A bit cooler here and rain forecast later. I have to wait in for some parcels so going to do some gardening whilst the rain holds off. I have one of those sleeveless fleeces I wear for gardening and diy - it's starting to hang off me........:D.
At this rate I shall be needing a whole new wardrobe before long. :rotfl:

I have to say, apart from a few aches and pains and backache, I am feeling tons better these days. I think the weight loss is really helping.0 -

Have you spoken with your GP about the 'blood sugar' problem humpty? You seem to have found a way of dealing with it through diet but it does sound strange.
You're right about the blossom LL. My road is lined with flowering cherry and it looks so pretty at this time of the year. Fortunately we haven't had the usual winds so they've stayed intact for longer this year instead of the usual pink snow.
I tried the culottes on after my shower and I'm pretty certain they'll be keepers. As the weather's not too good I think I'll do some wardrobe sorting later. There are skirts I didn't wear all winter so they might go in the CS bag.
The black, thermal top is excellent. It's long in the body and the sleeves so it'll be perfect as a layer.
Glad you got your stuff from Sainsbury's silva. I'm assuming that it was still 25% off. Result!:T
I think the Prezzo we used to have locally closed down. It's best feature was the Georgian Building it was in. I have to say I'm not a huge fan of so called 'casual dining'. I did eat once in Cote Bistro last week and it was OK but others aren't worth the money IMO although I sometimes eat in them to please my DGDs. We've just booked this morning for a family owned Italian that we really like and that's so different.:)
Just a quick question: I normally wear tops outside my skirt/ trousers. I noticed the other day when I wore my 'Katherine Hepburn' wide legged trousers that the shape didn't look right. I need something that tucks in. What do others do? Do you buy particular tops for different occasions/outfits?0 -
I think most wide legged trousers seemed to look better with a tucked in top. The KH ones you see pictured nearly all do, and KH herself tended to offset hers with either crisp tailored shirts or a feminine chiffon type blouses, always tucked in.
I am just having a break from gardening to rest my back. I have done the most critical before the rain sets in....I'm actually sitting outside, it's overcast but warm and I have felt a few spots of rain.
It's on its way......:rotfl:
Actually the gardens do need some. It's been very dry here and I'm really having to nurse my most recently planted tree and shrubs. The ones I planted a few weeks ago are now well established and seem content but the latest additions have been struggling so they are on "intensive care". :rotfl:0 -
I would never wear wide legged trousers, I would look like a big rectangle, lol.
I just bought some Superdrug vitamin C facial wash as the hot cloth cleanser didn't suit my skin as it was too harsh. I also got some poppy red nail varnish.
I got a Phase Eight grey wrap dress for £1 and an Oasis mini skirt for £1 from a charity shop.:)
I bought a few other white tops and dresses and I am dyeing them tulip red as we speak. It's my last pot of dye.:D0 -
Looked in to my local TKM for a strapless bra - no luck but spotted a dropper bottle of Vit C & Hyaluronic Acid facial serum so bought that instead! Matalan further along had the bra I wanted in my size....last one on the rack - phew!!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

Hello Ladies,
I had a lovely 5 day visit with family in Birmingham. I decided that I only wanted to wear really nice clothing, Van Dal sandals, make up, layer my perfume and carry nice leather handbags throughout the whole 5 days. I got some really nice compliments from family on particular outfits, especially the outfit I wore on the Saturday to a local club that we frequent. :j:D:T
I had to careful about my eating and drinking habits as there was no device that I could use to do my daily DVD exercises.
I had to give my exercises a miss this morning because I was feeling exhausted after a very active visit with my sister H for 5 days in Birmingham. I will continue with my exercises tomorrow after my weary body has had a good rest today.
I have already been buying my size 16 swimming costumes from eBay. I have got some fantastic bargains with Marks and Spencer and Zogg swimsuits.
I added £200 of the PIP back pay to my £200 birthday money and treated myself to the 18ct gold unusual links 20 inch chain that I wanted from eBay. I will wear it as much as my other solid gold chains once I have received it.0
