  • I found a lot of colleagues who are proud of going over and above have surprisingly static salaries over long amounts of time, especially in industries that weren't sales or the like. It doesn't sound like the person in this example was in such a job (as the clear reason for no bonus would be not exceeding sales targets - though bank careers do usually head in that direction).

    There is definitely something to be said for not being wilfully resistant to any requests to do a bit more than you're contracted to do and often it just comes down to your line manager. However in my experience employers are usually more likely to expolit workers than reward workers; more likely to ask you do an extra hour than to let you take an hour off.
