  • Hi,

Has anyone heard of Dial a Rod boiler cover for £40/year?
    dialarodheatingcover.com

They also have more comprehensive policies which include central heating system, plumbing, external drains, ets - fully comprehensive top policy is £150/year.

Has anybody heard/experienced their reliability, competence, etc

    Thanks
  • Do not just go on price. I am with E-on, never used them in a year. Am now in a freezing house with no heating or hot water and a leaking radiator, three children under five, and apparently I have been "fast tracked" but still need to wait 48 hours- and am meant to be grateful ( it originally was four days..) Absolute waste of money could get a plumber in myself to sort it if I hadnt wasted all my money on the insurance.
  • Had a house viewing this week and when I asked about the boiler I was told it hasn't been serviced for two years. I realise it's not a requirement for home owners to get a service and the vendors did say they would get it serviced if I purchased the house.

One of them then mentioned the boilers very old and they had a quote to replace for £5,500. They other person looked like they wanted to kick them lol !

This was their only quote and I am concerned that if we buy the house we could land ourselves in hot water .. pardon the pun.

Do replacement boilers really cost £5,500 ?

Also. We've had Homecare 300 with British Gas in the house we are currently in for a few years now. Is this transferable if we move to this other house ? I don't want to move house and BG hit me with a first service condemning this old boiler.

Any advice is very much appreciated.

    Thank you for your time.

You can transfer your agreement from one address to the other.
Ask the vendor to get a service done, and ask for a copy of this....
They must idicate if the boiler is in good working order. if they say yes, and it was then condemned within an X amount of days of completion, the vendor would be responsible for replacing the boiler, and the facts they provided were inaccurate.
Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?
  • What happens if your boiler goes totally KAPUT?

For example I have a 3 year old new build property and since I moved in I have noticed exactly how poorly fitted the property was – cheapo carpets glued onto concrete floor, shoddy plastering and workmanship and all sort s of corner cutting. This also includes an ‘Ideal Boiler’ that has been temperamental from day one.

Will there become a point where should a problem occur; it may be more economical to replace the boiler rather than repair? And if so will the insurance actually pay towards a new boiler?

I’m currently covered by Domestic and General and the reason I chose these was that they apparently offer £2k towards a new boiler should it be required.

Sounds like you're dealing with nice, honest people. I would suspect 5500 is pretty much about the top price you could be looking at but boilers come and go,so it will need replacing sooner or later anyway. Maybe a replacement is a bit of a bargaining tool over the property value but it certainly shouldn't be any sort of decider on purchasing a property or not.

If I take out a 1 year service plan with a local firm and pay up front for the year (£150 includes £70 annual service and all parts/labour) with my credit card, won't I be covered under section 75 if they go bust? I thought this covered goods and services ?
  • I have just started my boiler cover to a local company called GAS PROTECT they are a small firm in Bolton , the engineer is a lovley man who told me everything that I needed to know, he did not pressure me into anything and was straight from the start , it is only £10 a month and an annual service is included infact it came about after an offer of a boiler service for only £30 that I took up.

Our home was built new in 2006. It has gas central heating. In December 2009, we received a flyer from British Gas about its Homecare service. We took out the HomeCare 100 cover:

Service and repairs for boiler and controls; parts and labour included; annual service; no call out fees.

As at December 2009, the monthly charge was £11.

In December 2010, the price went up from £11 to £17 a month.

Today, we've received a letter from British Gas headed:

Sit back, relax and continue to enjoy expert service for another year.

The letter goes on to say: "When we work out your prices for the coming year, we look at your breakdown history."

    We haven't had any breakdowns.

The letter concludes by saying the monthly charge from this December will be £20.03p.

So in just two years, British Gas's HomeCare 100 has almost doubled, from £132 a year to £240.36 a year.

We're in north Cumbria and don't know of anyone who could take on this boiler service / boiler breakdown cover.

Does anyone here know of a national firm, or even a regional firm, that won't charge £240 a year for service/breakdown cover?

Or should we just grin and bear it and stump up the money to British Gas?????

    Thanks.
  • Well after my total disaster with N power and failed Maintence and repair they finally got it working but at a reduced heat and water temp but it still working at the moment
Cancelled my dd with Npower as I was not covered anymore and decided to take the bull by the horns
Checking carefully my small print conditions it said if they can't repair my boiler they will give me £450 off a new boiler
So after talking to a senior customer advisor and threatening them with a legal action they agreed to it

But that week NPower had made a decision to stop installations in my part of the uk (maybe all over uk not sure ) and had closed their depos who does these

Not my problem T&Cs are black and white so demanded they supply me with a new boiler with £450 discount and I will get someone to install it

Various discussions and my continued threats of NPower having to supply a discount of £450
I had copies of adverts too ) the only way they could get out of it was to

Give me a chq for £450
Not bad work for a few phone calls and emails

( helps having a official title and letters and an intersting occupation that strikes fears into companies )

Had a quote from BG bargain at £3900
Including power flush at £1200 wow
In the end showed a local plumblerthe boiler I wanted on the net £900 and £100 for a flue and I wanted to pay £300 for installation not bad for a days work I got it for £1275 for a baxi megaflow with 2years guarantee so no £200 per year Maintence contract

    Good result all round

Not need to tackle my £12 orange owe me from 2 months ago and yet they ring me every week wanting me to pay them money despite me cancelling in August
Think a half price iPhone might compensate my hurt feeling of harassment from their collections dept
