Cheapest Boiler Cover Discussion

Warning to those who have Eon boiler cover and move house.
We have had Eon 50 boiler cover (means £50 callout charge - but cheaper product) for a few years for a usually quite reliable 10 year old Worcester Bosch boiler.
We were reasonably happy until this year
2 problems
1. we had a problem with the hot water supply that sometimes it would just stop producing hot water. we called Eon, an engineer came out and "fixed" the problem. we had to pay £50 callout charge. unfortunately, within a week the same problem recurred and we would have had to pay £50 again callout. which I refused as I don't think that the problem was resolved the first time. I wanted to cancel the policy but would have had to pay £75 cancellation charge, so it was cheaper to continue for another 2 months with the policy. HOWEVER
2nd problem. we moved house and originally I was told that the policy could simply be transferred to the new house. (we were in month 10 of a 12 month policy) As we were planning to get a new boiler I was not really interested in a long contract. to my surprise, Eon sent me a letter with a new 12 month contract for the new house. when I rang them (required multiple phone calls to a 0845 number - arghh!) they told me that I had to take out a new 12 month contract , otherwise they would not cover the boiler in the house we moved to. I was annoyed because this was not what I had understood when I had rang them about moving house. I was told that Eon always says that their contracts are 12 months. However, I pointed out that I was not told that I would have to take out a NEW 12 month contract - and the Eon person had the audacity to say that they don't have to tell me that I have to take out a new 12 month contract with them!
They now sent me a bill for the last month of the old 12 month contract, even though this refers to the old house. So they are charging me for a service in the old house, even though I don't live there anymore! I don't think this is right.
so beware! I actually think that they are in breach of their own terms and conditions because nowhere does it say that if you move house you have to take out a new 12 month contract with them or have to pay off the old contract in full!
I think this is problematic and unethical behaviour by a big utility company as you are either being forced to pay something for nothing (ie pay for cover for the old property where you don't live anymore; or pay hefty cancellation fee of £75) or are forced to take out a new 12 month policy with them.

My problem is this - moved to new home and contacted BG to have new contract with them. Also objected to paying £26 a month and they reduced it to £16 as a new customer!! However they sent an engineer round to do a service/inspection and everything was ok except he felt one of my rads when it started to heat up and said it was cold at the bottom and that it was a sign of sludge in system and the system needed power flushing. A quote for nearly £800 was given. He showed me a rag which was a bit rusty looking which he said came from bleeding the same rad. All very convincing - but once my rads are heated up there are no cold spots. Also he wrote this on my contract so if my boiler breaks down the engineer could well say it was down to sludge in the system then I am not covered for that problem. As part of good will they will repair it only once. The boiler is only 6 yrs old I am fairly certain that it was power flushed when it was done cos the vendors told me this. If I get someone else to powerflush they won't accept this as its not BG doing the work. I think this is a lot of money which we can't afford and don't know whether to try someone else for servicing. I am also not sure whether this is a ploy by BG to get work done needlessly. I would like a second opinion on all of this cos at the moment I feel as if I'm being ripped off! What do others think and advice would be gratefully received.0

Don't worry about it, all breakdowns which aren't related to sludge are covered always. If the fault is related to sludge the idea is the first repair is covered so that the engineer can demonstrate the cause and advise accordingly. Feeling the bottom of a rad isn't a diagnosis of a sludge problem.0 -
Anyone out there got cover for two boilers? We have two non-condensing Potterton boilers (I think one for heating one for water) but all the online forms just allow you to input one. Before I start ringing just wondered if anyone could recommend a supplier. Many thanks.0

Nine years ago we were stitched up by a boiler repairer to the tune of £375. He vanished into the ether.
A second quote to put right what he had done came in at £350.
We signed up to BG cover and the follwing week they came and fixed it as part of the deal.
We also had the plumbing and drains cover.
Not long after the 300 year old drainage to our old house collapsed - they came and dug up the garden and fixed that too.
When we moved house we had a very unpleasant smell develop inside.
BG to the rescue and they found stagnant water under the house.
To cut a long story short it took three months to sort out the problem which nobody could find.
We had 4 camera surveys, all the main drainage pipes re-sleeved and the area manager met with our insurer to sort out the claim on the insurance (basically disinfecting and airing the house).
So, including a few other minor issues including a within 2 hours call out to a burst pipe at the height of last years freeze and the annual service, we've had our moneys worth.
However it's still £295 a year... does anyone know of an alternative... I can't find any.
Thanks.0 -
Hi
Has anyone had any dealings with Insurance Choice ? I've just had a renewal notice from BG for my Homecare 200, which covers the boiler and central heating system, quoting £269.93. On the comparison sites, I've found Insurance Choice who offer a full Home Emergency scheme covering pretty much everything for £228.00.
This seems pretty reasonable, but as I've never heard of them I thought I would ask on here
Thanks for any replies, Mick0 -

cheaper for a reason.. bgs is a maintenence agreement IC is a home emergency agreement:
Start by comparing the t&C's: http://www.insurancechoice.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Home_Emergency_Terms.pdf
ive picked out the big differences......
Assistancemeans the reasonable efforts made by theengineer during a visit to the home tothe cover provided.
complete a temporary repair to limit or prevent
damage or if at similar expense the cost of
completing a permanent repair in respect of
Claim Limit£1,000 including call out charges, labour,
parts, materials and where applicable the cost
of alternative accommodation, the number ofcall outs provided under your policy duringthe period of cover shall not exceed three
i dont think i need to go on..... they only guarantee a temporary repair, and all that mmoney for only 3 breakdowns.......
STAY CLEAR........
Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0 -
I have had an ideal minimiser boiler for 11 years now ,always serviced by bg great but their price crept up to £25 a month so I was tempted by n powers £15 a month and half bqcknif no claims so moved to them in April
Had the first service and check ok a decent and knowlegble bloke
2 weeks ago it didn't come on so rang N power and the same engineer came out in for half an hour and said something had tripped it but ok now and working
He left
That night it didn't pack up this was a Friday so rang the help desk
Yes hopefully engineer can come back tomorrow so took a day off work
Nobody came
Rang upnsat evening
Sorry about that
Monday ok ?
Yes
Took monday work
1pm a call engineer can't call as bereavement
Anoyed but had to except it
Offer call Tuesday but I couldn't take another day off work at short notice so agreed on Wednesday
Wedensday came I took a call to say engineer could not come to Saturday as no one in area
Very annoyed spoke to a couple of people then got to N Power head office and spoke to supervisor who was very good and rang back 2hours later today a sub contractor would call Thursday
Another day off work
Guy came and said he needed to order part for Friday and will fit it
Ok
Friday took another day off guy rang wrong part ,sorry Tuesday ok
Ok will have to be then
Monday he turned up fitted part said he was a sub contractor as n power only have one engineer for Cumbria
Thursday packed up again rang up Thursday pm
Original engineer came Friday
Looked for an hour and said heat exchanger has gone
Not in contract to fix as not viable for repair due to value as in small print so need new boiler
He was a decent bloke and recomended buying off the internet and getting a corgi man to install
He said bg and N power t&cs are the same so I would not get a heat exchanger put in
So 6 days taken off work and no boiler fixed
And to top it up when on the Tuesday they told me an engineer could not come for 5days as no one in area they were NOT an emergency call out service
I was miss sold a policy and will now cancel and am considering taking court small cliams out for 6 days loss of pay for waiting in
N Power
Don't touch them with a barge pole0 -
Npowers t&c;s are differ to British Gas.
Its well known companies that use subbies dont like replacing heat exchangers, and will write the boilers off, and cancel the agreement.
British Gas changed my heat exchanger no problem. boiler 8yrs old.
i have been burnt by a company that used subbies, thats why im so against them.Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0
