Cheapest Boiler Cover Discussion

I have clarified with npower that the Homecare plan which is £16pm to non customers (£15pm to their customers) for the central heating cover includes boiler, controls, radiators and pipework and includes an annual service. They have to do an inspection of your boiler first and they don't cover you for the first 14 days, there is no excess of £50 on the full policy but there is on the boiler cover policy only. They absolutely insist it is not Homeserve so I am thinking of going with npower as I've rung BG again but they cannot give me a good deal - yet their new cusotmers get it for £14pm reduced from £17pm until 31.8.10 which they say is an introductory offer. BG also tell me that I have had 2 callouts in 2 years so my premium is priced to reflect that I am an expensive customer. I think to have the premium loaded for one callout a year is a bit ripe! Sad as I didn't really want to leave them but its not competitive. I would value anyones feedback about the npower plan. Thanks.0

We are with Npower and just had our boiler repaired under this scheme
http://www.npower.com/web/fixedrepair/
so we knew we weren't going to get any ridiculous £90 an hour labour charges andthat all parts were covered up to £600
It was Npowers own people NOT Homeserve
I highly recommend them :T
The part alone would have cost us £130
I rang them about 5pm, they explained everything over the phone and came out the next day
We are now going to take out the complete cover so that we get the annual service plus unlimited call out etc as quoted in the info
If you are an Npower customer and don't call them out, you get 50% of your monthly payment credited back to youThe object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane — Marcus Aurelius0 -
Before activating the free Warranty for my new Valiant boiler, I called the manufacturer to ask some questions. At the end of the phone call, I was advised that (when I applied for the Warranty) I would be offered a 3rd year's cover for the cost of £47.88.
The following day I called the Warranty Registration phone number to register my Boiler. I was offered the 3rd year for .... £89.88!!
I stuck to my guns, and eventually got the 3rd year for £47.88.
(The company concerned was HomeServe.)
They then tried to sell me another policy to cover the incoming Gas pipeline ONLY.
So beware, this is a minefield. Know what you want before you make the call, and stick to it.0 -
2 questions-
- is anyone aware of any landlord's cover. BG only offers discounts if more than 10 props (no such luck!), otherwise its £19/m but with £24 for basic gas safety.
- I've been warned that BG or for that matter any other company will invariably at some point recommend power flushing etc. as a money making opportunity. What are your experiences?0 -
Last week I rang BG to tell them to cancel my cover when I discovered they had a new telephone option to press if you are cancelling. That wasn't an option before (4 weeks earlier) so I tried it as I thought they might offer me a better deal. I had always wanted to stay with BG but they just couldnt match Npower. Anyway, I was right they were trying to retain customers - and yet this was my third call to try to get a better deal. I am happy they have given me a deal of £18.26 which I decided to take as its only £2 more than npower and I won't have the extra work of having to get npower to view and accept my boiler. Thought I'd post this info in case its useful to anyone. Thanks to everyone for all their advice/info.0

One of the exclusions on the BG Homecare plans is;
'Removing and damage caused by Sludge and scale'
I'm still debating whther to take out a policy as a new customer but this seems like a bit of a 'get out of jail free' card to me. Any thoughts?0 -
I have an 11yr old Vaillant boiler, we went via the Vaillant website and took out boiler cover last year for the first time ever!
It was £107 and via Homeserve, just had the renewal an increase of £40 to £147.
Thought I'd call Homeserve via the Vaillant number and have a moan at the cost, plus they had calculated the DD wrong!
Ended up with a £20 discount, so now a total increase of £20 on last year0 -
Bluefin Insurance (part of AXA UK group) has just launched boilerplus heating insurance, which lets customers use their own local heating engineers with Aviva insurance cover built in as part of the deal. Visit the website boilerplus.co.uk to have a look.0

just gave a call to BG to cancel my boiler cover of £22, in order to go for Npower offer of £16. At the end stayed with BG for £16!! It only took 2minutes call, but saves me lots of money in the next year!0

It's a bit like running your car 100k miles never changing the oil or filter then taking out a warranty on it and expect to get a new engine. No one will cover sludge and scale problems, if you have them get them rectified then take out a contract.0
