go to www.advfn.com join and read the discussion forums, as a word of warning, most people who dream of wheeling and dealing in shares (daytraders) tend to lose money (around 90%) there is also spreadbetting, www.igindex.co.uk0 -
Spreadbetting a safer bet? What sort of financal position would you think i should be in before entering into shares? Can i ask how much you have invested and how you have done personally?Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

spreadbetting is a guatanteed way of losing any wealth you have, 90% lose their cash.
As for your financial position, well never risk more than you can afford to lose !
for share dealing, try www.selftrade.co.uk you can also do a self select ISA0 -

How long should i expect to have my money tied up for?
On stocks 10 years or maybe forever if the company never comes back like Rbs went from pounds to pennies, that money will never return.
On the other hand if lucky you could get the money back the next morning. I have bought 4pm and sold 9am and made 20% in those few hours but that is rare on big stocks
Spreadbetting is not quite that bad, there is always random good luck.
Just turning up on a stocks thread and expecting to make money would be similar to making a bet to place 5 mins before a horse race but theres always luck
Spreadbet is leveraged which means they lend you 9/10 of the cost and if you lose (badly) then you owe them the balance.
Most of the time your'll only lose the original stake but theres always a chance if you bet 100 you could owe 1000 or more. And vice versa0 -
Actually, spread betting is that bad, I believe those are the actual figures (ie 90% lose). There is random good luck, but you certainly can't rely on it!sabretoothtigger wrote: »Spreadbetting is not quite that bad, there is always random good luck.
Most of the time you will lose a multiple of your original stake, not just the stake. That's the point of spread betting, if you win you can win maybe 100 times your stake but if you lose, the reverse applies. It's only in fixed-odds betting that you can expect your loss to be limited to your stake. Most of the time your'll only lose the original stake but theres always a chance if you bet 100 you could owe 1000 or more.
