If an online market quote is unavailable, shouldn't the broker just decline a quote and/or give the option of proceeding with a negotiated trade?
I know I would be rightly !!!!ed off if a broker proceeded with a negotiated trade without my permission. I didn't think they were allowed to do this?

It is unlikely that a listed stock does not have a bid or ask, might not be bid or ask you like but that is neither here nor there.
A market order to buy or sell a stock is an instruction to buy or sell at whatever the market is offering (best price) You are telling a broker in the case of a market buy order, that you want those shares no matter what they cost, the broker has no requirement to come back to you, you have issued your instruction, the broker assumes you understand the instruction you have issued

I've been waiting a while now for the updated article on share dealing but still no sign! Would someone be able to tell me the cheapest equivalent to HB. I want zero monthly/annual fees - just a cost per transaction. Whats the best deal in terms of price/service?

Interactive Investor (iii.co.uk) is probably the cheapest to trade with, 10 pounds a trade, and it has no maintanence fees.

Right, i dont want to waste anyone's time here, this is a forum that is waaaaayyy over my head but i recently left my employment and because i took part in their share purchase scheme, i now have 57 ish shares in the company.
I want to transfer them to my name and wait because im hoping the price will go up over time and i am in no rush to sell them.
I received a form asking for 'custodian' details. This means nothing to me. I am in no way legally inclined or savvy with any of the typical stock market terms so does anyone know of a muppets guide online i can get answers to such basic questions.

Maybe they mean where is your stockbroker, if its not a certificate then you cant just hold them yourself.

Dear All,

I'm trying to choose a new online share-dealing account, and my priorities are a little different from those the article tries to address. The prorities are:

1. Make sure I get the votes at company general meetings associated with my shares.
2. Have the opportunity to invest in rights issues by the company/ies in which I hold shares.
3. Get the cheapest deal commission-wise - since I tend to go for small trades, I have a preference for a percentage commission rather than a flat fee.

Any advice, please?

Hi all,
I want to sell 3 sets of shares (1 batch of Santander shares in my name, 1 batch of Standard Life shares in my name plus 1 batch of Standard Life shares in my wife's name).
After these transactions I don't imagine i'll need the services of a stockbroker ever again.
Can anyone suggest the best way to do this (i'm thinking of course of how to avoid inactive fees and other charges like that).
