Hi All,

Looking for some expert advice

I have intrigued about messing around with shares for some time. I have quite a few what i regard as 'safe' shares i.e. big utility companies. But want to try my hand in more 'high' risk shares.

To be honest i am going with the expectation that i will lose the money but gain invaluable information. I would only really like to spend maybe £50 a month?.

Is this worthwhile? any advice as to where to start?

50 a month is fine, you want to utilise the benefits of a unit trust fund. That'll buy shares for you and split all the costs and risks among its holders and its very nice to build gradually.

They can be transferred, mixed and cashed out quite easily when you want the cash back. Some are specialist, many managed and quite a few are low cost trackers.
Depends what sector or country you think may do best in todays global economy, buying monthly means you have less hassle worrying at the start

Can somebody help me out here. Santander (BNC) is going ex dividend on 12th April and the record date is 11th April. Up until what date can I continue to trade so as not to miss out on the dividend? Santander seems to operate different timescales to other LSE listed shares - probably due to its Spanish origin. Thanks for any help.

It should blip down as soon as it goes ex-div. Its a hefty amount

I bought some share quite a while ago in large companies such as British Gas & BT (during the Thatcher era).

I don't know much about shares, but how would I work out if the shares would be profitable in the long run and when is it the best time to sell?

Nobody knows, they could go to zero or they could take over the world. All depends how well they are operated.

Didnt BG get split up into several companies. People usually sell for personal reasons, the best time might be when the price exceeds value and you dont believe their prospects are worth the premium

Like 2000 I thought that for BT however to this day I hold them as they were a gift Put your dividends into something more diverse might be best

This tiny cancer company have moved into the major league this week. Advanced Oncotherapy (AVO) have acquired a Swiss company called Adam, a spinoff from CERN, the group better known as the owners and operators of the Large Hadron Collider - particle accelerators, Higgs Bosun particles and all that.

AVO have developed a proton beam treatment for cancer in place of conventional radiation therapy, and have acquired ADAM in order to use the technology to develop the treatment. CEO Michael Sinclair is being interviewed on CNBC at 4.30pm today.
