Firstly, apologies for not being clear about any part of this question, I'm struggling to understand it myself!

So, I pay in to a company share scheme. It matures in 2014, when I will have paid in £14k. I know that I can then buy shares at an option of 61p which would give me 23090 shares.

My question is .. how do I get the maximum cash in the shortest period of time please?

    1. Could I put all 23090 shares in a Shares ISA on the day of maturity, then remove them the following week and sell them at that days rates? Would it be tax free then as they'd been in an ISA?

    2. If I have to do it bit by bit because of Capital Gains Tax, let's say they are worth £50k ... can I only take out my personal allowance of £10k, or can I also have the £14k I put in, thus giving me a first payment of £24k? I presume I could then take out another personal allowance of £10k the following April etc.

    3. As I'm not married (engaged and co-habiting for 11 yrs), can I gift any shares to my partner, allowing us to get 2 lots of personal allowance?

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give ... obviously I do not want to break any laws, but, if there are legal loopholes that I could take advantage of, that's fine!:D
I wasn't sure where to ask these questions as it's share dealing, but also tax and savings!

Look forward to hearing your advice!

Sad_Gills_Fan, you have a Personal Message regarding this.

At least, you should have, can't see it in my sent items but I'm not sure if it doesn't show up until you've read it.

Charles Stanley Direct have opened a new platform which looks pretty straight forward in terms of charges, and not too bad?

    Anybody using it, and feedback?

Clean funds available with 0.25% platform charge, or or refund of 100% comission if no clean fund available yet (or you move 'dirty' funds across)

Does anyone on here have experience of investing in shares purely for the dividend ie buying just before ex div day and selling soon after record day. Are there any obvious drawbacks to doing this other than share price fluctuations.

I have been day trading for some time with some modest success but I want to seek out those companies that pay good dividends and take advantage of them.

    Any thoughts?

If the dividend is, say, 10p, the share price falls by 10p when it goes ex-div (because any buyers will not now have the benefit of the divi) so, all other price fluctuations ignored, your would end up with the same amount of money less your dealing costs and bid-offer spread, ie the whole exercise would cost you around £25-£50 each time.
  • obvious drawbacks
Nothing obvious to gain or lose. Shares dont always fall on ex div, if they happen to rise that day it can be for some unknown good news. Its all about unobvious or foreseen beneficial differences between a buy and sell.

Look up arbitrage, its the basis (bias!) to every thing
  • Hello!

I am about to open self select ISA. This will be my first trading account. The two options I'm considering are:

    1) x-o for low dealing costs (no annual fee and £5.95 per trade);

    2) Barclays share-dealing (£60 a year and 12.95 per trade).

I will be investing 1k per month, not going to trade often. Barclays ISA would cost me £144/y more and additional £7 more each time I sell a stock. Is the higher cost justified by:

    -level of service
    -features available
    -security.

Also, some people in previous posts were complaining on x-o level of service, is this still the case (those posts were dated mid 2011)? And is Barclays service as good as they claim?

How hard is it to transfer S&S ISA to another provider, if I decide to switch after I build a substantial portfolio?
  • Never had a problem with xo. Anything less then 10k of shares is a small trade, most people should then opt to act accordingly and stick to the cheapest services.
Other types of cost would be tax and spread size so unless xo charge more then 1% more for the same shares at the same time I cant see a problem with them.
Same for an ISA, its for people who gain 10k every year in profits which unfortunately is not me so I couldnt be spending hundreds to use it hence cheap as possible

Is Barclays execution only or they are proposing to advise you.

Shares dont always fall on ex div, if they happen to rise that day it can be for some unknown good news.
Hence my reference to 'all other price fluctuations ignored'.

In other words, on the day of going xd for this theoretical 10p divi, if a share would otherwise have risen by 20p on that day due to good news, it would only rise 10p.

And if it would have fallen by 20p due to bad news, it would fall 30p.

The fact is, the company is now worth that much less (10p a share) to any potential new buyer, which is why the 'buy just before xd' strategy can never work. Don't worry, lots of people have thought of this before and, if there were money to be made, we would all be doing it!
