I want to buy some shares (only £300 worth) and need advice n which is the current best online deal please.

I see the MSE article is classed as out of date. I have shares already which I bought via my Halifax bank quite a few years ago, but would struggle to find the log in details at the moment. (hose move has caused a bit of a mess).

Is there somewhere I can just visit, pick the sharer I want, then pay for them with my debit card. ?

I don't really want he hassle of having to register, wait for a PIN number etc etc, which I think was the case with Halifax, all those years ago.

No there isn't. Any broker will require you to register etc.

Cheapest broker. But only UK shares. No idea how long it will take to register though, someone on this forum will have.

I have been reading the last few pages and have already seen x-o mentioned and it seems to be pretty good, as well as cheap. UK based too, not offshore seems to be a good thing too.

JPJ are cheaper then them and also a few very large professional firms. Just noticed Halifax doubled their dealing charges in some cases, owch

I tried x-o but for some reason was turned down. I have had no debts, no bad payments or anything iffy so don't know why. I understand Experian is the reason, as x-o state if i have a problem, don't contact them, but contact Experian instead.


I have just moved, so gave my new address, as well as the old address. which I think may be the reason.

I know I have no bad credit issues, in fact I have very rarely ever had a loan, except for my house, but that is paid off now.

May contact Experian tomorrow and see what they are doing.

You can blame the EU probably, I think its to do with laundering regs. If you are registered to vote, it should clear. They dont give credit on a standard account. Not having a loan is a point against you in terms of establishing a credit history and so on

I have not dealt with JPJ but Im considering it after halifaxs sharp price rise. Who would I complain to about a broker like people did with Selftrade. Just worked out Halifax would charge me over 800 in transfer fees if I wanted to move

I had a "funny" when I applied to open an S&S ISA with X-O. They wanted several items of ID, including ones I don't possess, like a valid passport or photo driving licence.

The daft thing is that I already had a nominee account with them so they had already vetted me with no problem.

I gave them a call and they spotted a slight difference in the address, something on line 1 instead of line 2 or something like that, and fixed it there and then.

I have a small portfolio with one of the larger stckbroking firms. I have asked several times for a breakdown in fees but their replies are less than transparent.

As there are good savings guides, are their good stockbroker guides rating perfromance, fees etc.
