They're not supposed to, but they have. I could cancel their permission, but what is to stop them just setting it up again ?

Your bank. Just quote the Direct Debit Guarantee https://www.directdebit.co.uk/DirectDebitExplained/pages/directdebitguarantee.aspx

No sign of a new DD being set up here; I bank with Santander -wonder if they are more careful about DDs being set up ??
Until they give me an account number I'll cancel ANY DDs they try to set up.

While Together should be following the correct process and notifying customers of the new DD (well, it seems they've outsourced this function, but the point stands), it's not a good idea to fight against a DD being set up as Ofgem has given them the right to charge customers for energy and it cannot be assumed money already paid to One Select has been recovered yet. This may lead to Together blocking you switching to a different supplier in due course.

However, it would be reasonable to complain about a DD being set up without due notice being provided. I've yet to receive the promised notification, although it was sent to a different customer a few days ago according to the data breach notification I received. But I haven't cancelled my existing DD as it isn't due for a few more days.

I was with both Iresa and Usio previously; cancelled DDs directly they went to the wall (because I don't trust rapacious administrators not to dip their hands in my current account) - never had DDs set up with either Octopus or First Utility who were the Suppliers of last Resort -neither blocked a switch away.:)

To state the obvious; the "right to charge customers for energy" is quite a different thing from the method used to collect payment from customers for said energy.

    Ditto.

Basically my reasoning as well. :)
  • This is the temporary tariff that Together Energy have put me on. I have put the details into the Energy Club and it is still a competitive price. They have said that they will confirm a tariff at a later date.

    Elec 15.02p Standing charge p/day 25.09p
    Gas 3.74p Standing charge p/day 19.06p
  • They also sent info about the DD too. I am going to sit tight and see what rate they plan to offer longer term and then decide whether to switch again. Despite the palaver I am glad that I did make the swap from Eon to OneSelect as it has made me a savvy hunter of bargains.

That's interesting. So you didn't use any energy while with those suppliers or did you settle up using a different payment method?

Yes, and I'm not suggesting they have the right to set up a new DD without following the correct process and informing customers in advance. What isn't yet clear to me is whether they have assumed the right to take over the existing DD agreements of One Select. Presumably not as I see a new DD listed for Together this morning and will now be cancelling the old one.
  • The irony for me is that with the hike in prices by Together Energy it would have been cheaper for this contract year to have accepted a deal from my old supplier than switch. So using the Cheap Energy Club has cost me money. I thought the whole point of this web site was to save people money!

    Mine is

    Elec 15.02p Standing charge p/day 26.17p
    Gas 3.79p Standing charge p/day 19.06p

Which is only very slightly different to the tariff of the previous poster above which I guess is down to the area you live in.
