Woke up this morning (da-dadada-dah!) and thought it was Wednesday.
It took 20 minutes and a full mug of tea to realise it, was, in fact, Thursday.
This meant I had a rather good day at work.
However, just in case some of you parents don't realise it, your great hulking teens are still little and scared when it comes to their GCSE mocks and self image - I'm dealing with the very last assessments at the moment and they are, for all their bullishness and bluster in the classroom or dinner queue, so petrified that many can't get a sound out, are on the brink of tears, shaking and are convinced they're failures before they even start.
I'm going to buy a teddy bear for the final assessments in Spring. And some satin ribbon if any need to twist that round their fingers (like the binding on cellular blankets). They're that anxious and scared. Where the parents are concerned, they've been grumpy, angry, unreasonable and shouty - which I don't doubt for a moment and you have our sympathies, because we get that the rest of the year - but right now, we're seeing the little boy/girl that's inside the grumpy, angry, unreasonable and shouty exterior.
If you've got a 15/16 year old who has been a nightmare to live with these last couple of weeks, give them a hug if they'll let you, tell them you're proud of them (irrespective of/before getting their exam results - as many will have lower grades because of anxiety) and whatever they want to eat, put a nice blanket on their bed if you have one or make sure their favourite jumper is washed and ready for them. And if they like it, make sure there is hot chocolate and all the bits you never normally bother with to go on top. I'm all for making kids be useful, but I promise you, they've probably earned it.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

What a great post, Jojo :T:T:T
The Nativity set (including the sheep) was finished at 1.00 am, and I got about 5 hours' sleep. It was well worth it - all the families who sometimes come to Toddler Group turned up together, and we not only acted out the Christmas story but also iced and decorated star and sheep biscuits (pink mini-marshmallows on some of the sheep:rotfl:) and made candle cards. And the grownups drank loads of coffee and ate a whole box of biscuits! Everyone enjoyed themselves, and one dad has changed his FB profile picture to show his 14 month old daughter cuddling Mary and Joseph
My flying today has been pretty much limited to washing up, sweeping the sprinkles off the floor and putting all the church chairs back in neat rowsTomorrow I intend to clean this house (downstairs rooms only
) before putting up our decorations.
I dropped DH off at the hospital this morning about an hour and a half before his appointment, and he managed to make his own way home by bus, train and taxi. His consultant has said that his CPAP machine is working well, so he is happy to tell the DVLA that DH is fit to drive again. Now the ball is in DH's court - he has to contact DVLA and then sort out his insurance, but he says he'll stop driving completely if they put his insurance premium up. I can only wait and see.... :cool:0 -
Morning
Thanks for the post, Jojo, from a parent that is living through the scenario. It is great to hear from the other side that it is exactly what you thought was happening. All I am doing is being there and cooking everything she loves so that she gets through this. And looking forward to doing it all again in a few months time....I knew it had to be bad when she did actually allow a hug a couple of times this week. The work she has done is phenomenal and so different from the old O Level days (showing my age...), my hat goes off to the teachers who are inspiring teens everywhere to get to grips with this.
It's a full day at work, then there will be traffic chaos to get home as the small town is closed for its Christmas event. DH has the day off, so has been tasked with disconnecting the wm in readiness for the new one tomorrow, and finding Christmas from the loft. Apparently that is a two man job, although if memory serves me well, it has always been a one (wo)man job when I've done it...0 -
Jojo my boys are rapidly approaching their GCSE's. I shall definitely bear you post in mind. I had a misspent youth and couldn't have given fewer flips about my GCSE's at the time (full of regret now. I really should look at redoing them) so I sometimes forget how stressful it can be for them.
Well my late shifts caught up with me yesterday, either that or I have the beginnings of a cold. I dozed away the afternoon. Couldn't help myself. Got some basics done, but I can catch up with the rest over the weekend.
Today I'm waiting on Mr T turning up with my Xmas Food (mostly frozen), which will take up a good portion of my morning, and then it's off to work. I'll just be doing basics again today.0 -
Love the post Jojo not sure my DD1 will reach GCSE age she has a year to go and I might commit murder before the end of the year. Teenage girls are really hard work!_pale_

Living room is looking quite nice, clean, tidy and the tree is up.
Kitchen still a bit of a mess but not actually all that bad once I throw everything in the DW. Dinner nearly sorted for tonight, just need to blitz sauce as DD1 doesn't like bits of onions etc. she is working for exams too (medical student) and is home for a bit of care and attention, I can no longer help with studies but can still provide food and clean clothes and a listening ear when required.
Hope to go into big city tomorrow so we'll see what the protests bring.
Sorted main presents out, just need a few stocking fillers and a little something for our freinds (15 year old boy could be a challenge)
Most pleased to have my new pellet stove today as it hasn't got above freezing all day. It is so much easier than logs.0 -
Hi all
Just checking in quickly, madly busy at work, v. tired. Mad 60 mile dash to collect DS home from hospital on Tuesday after he had an accident, thankfully not as serious as first thought and he is on the mend. On the upside he will be at home for Christmas.
Roll on next Friday.0 -
Lots of ((hugs)) for you and GWS vibes for your DS, YL.
It's Friday.
Exams are over, so the guitar and amp are once again going upstairs.
Work today has been a blast - not a word I usually associate with paid stuff.
DH has gone to the pub for a couple of hours.
I am watching Masterchef with a cuppa.
New washing machine arrives tomorrow at 7am. Oh well, something had to burst my bubble!0 -
yl more get well vibes. We're quiet on here, all frantically busy getting lots done but beating ourselves up over what we haven't done I suspect.
Today I'm expecting miracles, getting the house straight, decorations up, 2 flower arrangements and a door wreath to do, dessert to make and freeze for Christmas Eve, lists to revisit, 5 reports to do, knitting etc.
However on the plus side my "dream furniture" is in the hall which is looking good and now just needs things put back in ie mirror on wall etc; lounge carpet has shampooed well; we did our charity food shop yesterday so that's done.
Have a good weekend everyone, keep warm and enjoy the festive atmosphere amidst your chaos. Enjoy your horses Shirl yes they are time-consuming but snuggly! This is our 3rd winter without horses and there were plus points aside from breaking ice on water buckets and wading through mud!Remember...a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.0
