Is pepperoni vegan? I always have assumed that it must have some kind of meat content...

    Are there other vegan meats?
    .

They mean some sort of soya/quorn based fake meat pepperoni

While on the topic of fake vegan meats, anyone else tried Oumph! ?

I am a sucker for their kebab spiced 'meat' after a few pints. Stick it on a pile of fried chips with whatever stale veg you have in the fridge, and it's just like going for a 'real' one! Bit pricey at £3.50 a pack, but you get 2 decent portions out of it, so it's nice as a treat. I always cover mine in garlic mayo, making the meal only veggie, but other vegan sauces are available. :)

I have been out for a few meals lately and every menu has had vegetarian options, all of which were cheese dishes.
One well known store has 1 option (macaroni cheese)
A restaurant I visited had 30 options for meat and fish eaters, and 3 cheese dishes for vegetarians (bizarrely the salmon dish was marked as vegetarian)
I shall stay at home from now on, obviously my money is not wanted.
Don't get me wrong I like cheese, just not for every meal.

30 meals for meat eaters will be broken down into 3 chicken, 3 beef, 5 fish, 5 pork etc.

I am allergic to fish, and can't eat anything spicy, so my choices are limited too - 3 choices I can eat on a menu is sufficient though.

People with restrictive diets don't get the same choices as those without - this is same for medically imposed diets such as allergies as it is with lifestyle choices such as veggie and vegan.

You don't have to have cheese for every meal, as I assume you don't eat out every day?
I have gone out for a meal to seafood restaurants for friends birthdays - and a lot of the time the only non seafood option is steak or the veggie option - none of which appeal to me, but I can eat them, so I do, as its not everyday, its only when eating out!

Sadly, the dairy industry is more cruel than the meat industry. Check out a video called Dairy is Scary if you are interested.

OP - another vote for visiting the happycow.net site if you are looking for somewhere you and your friends can all enjoy :)

Yes but if you eat meat you also eat dairy, being veggie at least cuts out 1 option.
  • Having had a girlfriend who was a veggie, I was amazed that when questioned, how many restaurant staff never had a clue if the cheese used in their dishes was suitable for vegetarians and even in some Italian restaurants, they didn't know that true Parmesan cheese can never be vegetarian.
  • I gave being a veggie a go, but the lack of options when out and about drove me away from it in the end. If there was more options, I'd give it another go.

Why be half baked though if you care about cruelty? The dairy industry and the meat industry are the same industry. Dairy is not a bi-product, it is a co-product of meat production. By consuming dairy, vegetarians are supporting the meat industry.

I was vegetarian for 40 years before becoming vegan 3 years ago. The dairy industry really does a number on the public by marketing its products as humane, happy cows etc. I wish I had known decades ago what I know now :(

Spooky! We had the Oumph! kebab strips tonight stir fried with veg and spices in taco shells with salsa, guac and grated Violife. Only half a packet of Oumph! between two of us and padded out with lots of mushrooms as, as you say, it's quite pricey. We had the Oumph! pizza but I thought the 'meat' was a bit rubbery.

That sounds delicious! I've never tried the pizza - I managed to get all the 'meats' on half price one time to try, and now just buy the kebab one occasionally. Never thought of using it in a taco, when I do Mexican I just go for refried beans.

I wish dairy alternatives were cheaper - thankfully they're now much more readily available, but the increased cost just makes them unobtainable for me at the moment. It's certainly an avenue I'd like to explore more in the future, if and when my living situation changes or the prices fall.
