I am pro vaccine and will be having it as I agree it is the only way out of this situation.
My issue is the lack of informed consent for those people who have started the Pfizer vaccination based on the clinical trial data showing it is 95% effective and now being told that they will have to wait 12 weeks for the second dose, which has not been subject to clinical trials to determine how effective it is.
I think those people should have been given the option to wait and have the Oxford vaccine which has been trialled with a 12 weeks timeframe.21 -

We certainly can't afford to risk the frontline teams trying to hold the NHS together. They're already exhausted, overstretched and traumatised by what they've been through over the last 12 months. We need to invest in getting them fit and healthy, and somehow find a way to fill the staffing gaps to allow them to rest and recover. I know it takes time to train medics, and we already have medical students and nursing students helping to do this, so there needs to be some serious thought, effort and money into how we can fast-track training where people are in related roles or ones with similar skills but which may be easier to fill. There's a lot of unemployment right now, so investment in getting some of these people (where appropriate) into roles that will help reduce the pressure on frontline staff surely makes sense?20 -

I know this is only anecdotal, but my 80 year old sister was one of the first to get the Pfizer jab, on Friday 11 December, only three days after they started rolling it out. A week later on Friday 18th she had to go to A&E. Nothing to do with Covid. They kept her in overnight and tested her as a matter of routine. The test came back positive Saturday morning. BUT she has been completely asymptomatic, despite having a tendency to chest infections. She's now out of self isolation and has an appointment for a second jab next week. I don't know if that will still go ahead
Obviously, I can't know how she would have been if she hadn't had the vaccine. But it seems to me it must have been offering some protection within the week.
And I'm sure it wasn't a false positive as both my daughters subsequently tested positive. Strangely enough, DH and I both tested negative despite the fact I was sitting with my sister in A&E for five hours. Self isolation at short notice just before Christmas with no chance whatsoever of a supermarket delivery was not ideal timing but my preps together with portion control over the fresh veg saw me through and I only had to ask a neighbour to pick up some fresh cream from the corner shop.It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!22 -
Well done, mary on the preps foresight. Glad you and DH are negative and hope daughter's and sister are well now.
I am not anti-vaccine. Blimey, if i were offered it today (and it didn't impact anyone more in need) i'd have it; i'd willingly take part in any trial. What i don't like is government manipulation to make themselves look better (IMO) at the risk of, for example, my 88 year old MiL (who has only had the first dose) being ill when she needn't have been because they are now making her wait for the second. Ditto my Sister, sister in law and niece who are all nurses and now may not have full protection.I wanna be in the room where it happens23 -
Absoliutely agree re the UK govt's sneaky underhand useless handling of the vaccine. If there's a way to mess things up then this lot will find it. We'll take it, of course, but it should have been done properly - other countries have done it!

I had my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine yesterday, and have an appointment for the booster on 21 January. I wonder if they will honour those booster appointments already made? We shall see.One life - your life - live it!16

Having said that, I think the data on the new variant has created a bit of a panic. The fact that medics have been flagging up the issues for weeks doesn't seem to have meant that the politicians were prepared for the data. The Imperial College analysis is pretty sobering. As are the charts that John Burn-Murdoch has been publishing for the FT.19 -
Surely it is better to vaccinate as many as possible with the first dose. Even at 25% effectiveness it will slow down the spread until a full programme for everyone can be rolled out.
All that clutter used to be money17
