thriftwizard said:Just wondering whether anyone fancies joining me in a little challenge? It crossed my mind yesterday to try to spend a week using only mechanical gadgets in the kitchen, apart from the actual cooking devices, i.e. the cooker, the kettle & the toaster; no breadmaker, no food processor, no hand mixer, no Bamix. I don't know why! It just seemed important to remind myself of how things used to be done, and how much time they used to take. I'm lucky enough not to need to use them, i.e. no arthritis and no trouble lifting things. I do have a number of old-fashioned gadgets like an ancient Mouli-legumes and a good hand-whisk, which will make life a little easier. We hardly ever have power cuts here, but that's not to say we never will, and I just want to keep my hand in, as they say!
Oddly enough, we did have two tiny power cuts at the start of that time; a mains cable "died" with much drama up the hill, which was mended quite swiftly, but that caused a bigger fault "downstream". Others were powerless all evening & overnight; we were only"out" for about 5 minutes each time until the 'leccy was re-routed. Goes to show, it can & does happen still. Particularly when said cables are still encased in Edwardian ironwork...

ETA: what splendid feline guardians you have, 3SM!With more people working from home, they’re not going to be able to get away with neglecting rural infrastructure in the same way. Although Boris seems to have forgotten about getting us all decent broadband.16 -
I've not needed to drive at night for about 20 years. It never used to be a problem for me. Now 55, I had to show a couple of flats this evening. It seemed to take immense concentration to avoid hitting anything. (Glasses prescription is up to date.)Anyone else find this?16

It feels incredibly sad thinking about my children leaving home, granted the eldest is 5 so we still have a while, i've recently been thinking of how we could adapt the house to offer communal living later on if required, I have a few ideas one of which is a is a small extension on the side and then going into the roof, ah one can dream big plans!
I hate to say it but.....Brexit, realistically how long should we be planning for disruption at ports and food issues? 3m 6m......15 -
