QUOTE: I've tried to get more info on discharge rates. Of the nearly 3,000 confirmed cases, so far only about 50 odd people have recovered and been discharged. So it seems, from that, that the virus can take a long time to recover from in the best case scenario.[/QUOTE]

Either that or they're hanging onto patients to make sure they aren't still infectious.

Yes, strong possibility, but equally it seems pneumonia is a common eventuality with this virus and doesn't respond well to drugs. Sounds bl00dy awful, to be fair!

On our local BBC radio station there was an interesting telephone interview this morning with a local chap who had visited Wuhan on business last week and, now being banned from travelling home, was holed up in his hotel. He said it was all a bit chaotic - the hotel guests had to file through the dining room to collect their meals in takeaway containers then had to immediately return to their rooms to eat alone. The reason given was that the hotel was under orders not to allow people to congregate in large numbers (ie in the dining room). Asked if he was confined to his hotel he replied no - the guests were allowed to come and go as they pleased, which seems a rather half hearted way of attempting to stop the spread of any virus!

Confirmed cases almost doubled overnight. Almost 5,000. And deaths now over 100.

Thanks for that cheery news Euronorris! Think I'll hunker down and get my knitting out.

Seriously though, the rapid spread really is quite alarming.

Sorry! I know it's not cheery, but better to be kept abreast of such potential threats I think.

Have sent husband out to purchase some rice in bulk should the SHTF. And ordered some masks and goggles for us (they're decorating ones, so they'll still have a purpose in the future if it all fizzles out).

I feel a bit weird doing that. Like I'm panicking unnecessarily, but if I waited until it was certain that we needed them, it would be too late. They'd be sold out everywhere. So, they are our 'just in case' items. And like I said, can still be used for another purpose in the future (and in fact, may come in handy when husband is constructing a support frame for veg trug. I suspect there will be a fair amount of sawing and drilling involved).

“We don’t know how infectious it is, we don’t know how severe it is, and we don’t know how it’s spreading,” a former CDC director says of China’s coronavirus

I'd much rather know what's happening and what the figures are, yes it's concerning but surely knowledge is strength when it comes to being prepared for things that might affect our lives in the future? Wishing it wasn't happening isn't going to make it go away is it?

I always have a good sized stash of 'just in case items' just in case something comes at us out of the blue, at least with this problem we hopefully have time to make whatever plans and purchases we feel individually will help keep us out of harms way should the worse happen and there is a world pandemic. If it doesn't happen well then we have useable supplies in hand and they'll be used up in everyday life.
