Hi,
According to a radio interview, it takes four days between catching the virus and displaying any symptoms.1 -
They've now closed Wuhan and stopped people travelling from that city to anywhere else but it feels a little like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted doesn't it? The news pointed out this morning that there is a 5 day incubation period of the virus before symptoms show and that the person infected was infectious in that time so you could travel, be screened and be allowed entry into other countries because at that point you would not be showing symptoms and then go on to develop the illness. No easy answers are there?1

More scary is the fact now confirmed in Mexico and passengers reporting that they were not checked, just given a leaflet on what to do if they started feeling ill.£71.93/ £180.001

This on Edinburgh news today:
"In any European countries there is a danger that these cases occur," he said. "Here at the University of Edinburgh we have more than 2,000 students from China and they are always coming and going back to China so we are relatively sure we will have cases in the UK from travellers coming back from China."1 -
Possible 4 cases in the UK I've just read about.£71.93/ £180.001

This one may bear watching, especially with the nasty flu & D&V viruses already on the loose. The D&V has knocked the stuffing out of my mother, my brother & my SiL, who are all fairly robust normally; I wouldn't want to see them catch anything else on top of that.Angie - GC Sept 25: £226.44/£450: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 28/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)1

Totally agree. Too late. It is now spreading round the world, with the 5 day incubation period and international plane travel when you can get almost anywhere in less than 24 hours there is no chance in stopping it. All we can do is be in a situation where we can reduce the number of times we need to go out. I see on the news there is panic food buying in Wuhan with empty shelves and scuffles over food.1 -
Have just seen the latest news and the film of about 50 diggers on a huge site in China where they are building a 1000 bed hospital in a week.
That's right, one thousand bed hospital in a week.
Absolutely amazing, although I imagine it will be fairly basic.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

Three confirmed cases of the Wuhan virus in France on the news this morning and the six suspected cases here in the UK all test negative but I suspect it's a matter of time alone before it arrives here in the UK. The death numbers have jumped to forty something this morning in China and I am making contingency plans to stay in as much as possible should there be the need to. No guarantee that this will keep us safe but it's 'droplet spread' from coughs, sneezes etc. so we will implement a rigorous hand washing regieme on coming back into the house and keep all the door handles and other surface areas we touch as we come in from outside contact scrupulously disinfected and perhaps avoid face to face close contact with anyone else, it's all we CAN do!1

Hello Mrs L, I've popped up after a bit of an absence largely on account of this virus business. There have been some claims that the mortality in China is much higher than the official figures. They are certainly taking some extraordinary measures. I suppose it all depends how it mutates but they are now saying it is infectious in the incubation period.
I have been on immune suppressants for several months now, having been diagnosed with a rare auto immune condition which has attacked my lungs so I already live those precautionary measures you mention every day. I use a foam or a gel for hands when out and on return, it has to be a minimum 20 second handwash, then rinse under clear water. I have to try and avoid even a common cold so I run a mile if anyone coughs or sneezes nearby. Some with my condition coat the inside of the nostrils with a special gel when they go out. I have to be mindful too of things like handling money. Short of going out in a hazmat suit, it's hard to know what I could do extra if this thing ramps up. Let's hope it doesn't because I know first hand how much our NHS is struggling - the system is so overloaded, there will be a knock on effect for everyone. On that cheerful note.... :rotfl:1
