The Prepping Thread - A Newer Beginning ;)

Wuhan coronavirus is a new coronavirus that has begun in a seafood market in Wuhan in China. There are some 45 reported cases of a pneumonia like illness and so far two deaths from it but there is speculation that there are into the thousands of actual cases many not reported. Wuhan is a transport hub for international flights all over the planet so there is potential for it to spread. So far they don't know its origin, don't know if it is human to human spread and there are only 6 other coronaviruses that are known of so this may be a brand new one. Interesting times and why in part we are preppers in the first place.1

It sounds similar to SARS, and that was prevented from spreading due to screening at airports, which is now being done at international airports for passengers from Wuhan.1

The evening news reported cases in Japan, Thailand and now South Korea and the suggestion that the UK ought to start the thermal monitoring of travellers as they arrive in the UK to detect anyone with a fever. I think it's inevitable that there will be concern over this newly emerged virus spreading and the Chinese lunar new year will mean many Chinese people travelling to all parts of the globe to be with family for the celebrations so there are bound to be a few who arrive with the virus already as there is now confirmation of human to human transmission. I'm sure all that can be will be done to stop it becoming a problem but there are bound to be cases outside the Chinese mainland before we see the end of it.
The news this morning said there is a case confirmed now in Australia of a man who had been home to the Wuhan area to visit his family recently and more confirmation that it is human to human transmissible as many of the medics dealing with the people known to have the virus are also becoming ill with it, interesting times indeed!1 -
Should you have to redirect post, check you have the right redirection - there’s one envelope labelled “moving home?” and another “redirecting mail in special circumstances”.
Wonderful what you get wrong at times...
ETA If you have solid reason to believe the new address is not widely known, then don't pay the royal mail currently £33.99 for 3 months redirection but block the direct mail via www.thebereavementregister.org.uk/ who are free.1 -
Tonight's news says there are now hundreds of cases of the Wuhan virus right across China, it sounds as if it's more easily transmitted between humans than was previously thought.1

And just as the Chinese New Year kicks off and folks are scampering around to be with family & other auspicious locations...
Still, they've learned from SARS & seem to have chosen to be a lot more open. For which, hurrah.0 -
Nine reported deaths this morning and some 450 + reported cases some of whom are critical. WHO meeting later in the week, airports in the UK starting to monitor incoming passengers from Wuhan and an area of the airport created to take anyone to who shows signs of raised temperature and fever. One case now confirmed in Seattle in the USA. It's worrysome!1

To be fair, if the Chinese decide to lock down Wuhan, they have the logistics & the Army.
Just it won’t help their reputation, much, & I doubt any western journalist would volunteer to be embedded.0 -
I think it's too late for a lock down to have any effect now, if they'd done it when the first few cases cropped up there might have been a small chance of containing it ( think Eyham and the Black Death) but with this week being the biggest festival of their year with the tradition of people travelling back home to spend time with family to and from all parts of the globe it's likely to travel with them and there I think, are bound to be cases popping up all over the place. I hope there is some effective treatment in place for those cases and that they can determine the vector the virus came from and find ways to combat it at source. It's a waiting game from now until that happens I feel.1
