Look after yourself Pineapple and stay well xxx1

Hi Pineapple it's a very difficult set of circumstances for you to have to live with even in normal times without adding in the unknown that is the Wuhan coronavirus and all you can do is what you're currently doing, you're doing all physically possible to avoid infections and you can do no more than that love. Do your best (as I know you are already) and keep on doing it to stay safe as long as you possibly can. This new virus is an unknown to all of us and there's no knowledge to predict if it will just peter out or spread and no idea of timescale for either option or anything in between. We'll have to wait and see and we're ALL, every human on the planet, in the same situation without exception, waiting and hoping things can be sorted out and treatments found before things possibly escalate. Nothing we can do about it is there?1

Last week someone on 'Speak EV' had an accident with a pedestrian.

We've been trying to help him with the correct procedure for reporting the accident, and getting his car repaired. Someone mentioned they have an 'Accident Checklist' from Halfords. I've looked at the site but can't see any, so googled 'Accident Checklist'. Most of the images were American, but this one is British, and seems relevant:

I'm going to make one for each car.1 -
Finished building up my stocks yesterday. Was a bit concerned to see a lady in York wearing a face mask, but my DD says she knows that she always wears one as is very germ phobic.Spend less now, work less later.1

I did think about getting some N95 masks tbh but there would have to be some progression before I would wear one. Apart from which I'd get some very odd looks out here in the Cumbrian sticks.
I do however think there is nothing silly about taking precautionary hygiene measures - if only for 'ordinary' flu. As said, I have to do that already anyway. Plus I can't imagine that the virus isn't already out there and silently circulating. Might stock up on cheap gloves as I have to wear them most days for secondary Raynauds anyway. The other thing is just keeping a sensible supply of stocks to minimise the need to 'mix' should there be any local hotspots. I can't imagine a Wuhan situation here but as someone who has a condition that most GPs have never encountered (I even had to spell it for one ), I can't adopt the mindset 'The odds of this happening to me are minimal so I'll ignore it'.

Just wear a big shawly scarf and wrap it round loosely so that you can just tuck your chin & nose down into it - that's what I do if I get the bus and somebody is coughing.1

That's good advice mardatha. I came close on the bus yesterday to telling someone to cover their mouth.Spend less now, work less later.1

The rolling TV coverage has even my husband suggesting we buy in rice & oats.
(He's not quite an antiprepper, just doesn't get as much comfort from the peace of mind. I therefore didn't suggest that the third item in his trinity would be loo roll!)
I'm hanging onto the fatality rates being under 5% & going Macbeth on handwashing.0 -
Whilst a facemask can limit the spread of infection a little, it isn't very effective as a) it's not air tight (there are usually gaps round the edges) and b) it doesn't cover your eyes. Someone coughing or sneezing near you, with your eyes uncovered, and you can still catch it. Hand washing is very important in this respect, as coming into contact with the germs on our hands and then rubbing our eyes is one of the most common ways we pick up viruses!
That said, it's better than nothing. If you can pair it with a pair of goggles, even better. And you'd have to replace them frequently. Fingers crossed it won't come to that, but the fact that the incubation period is anywhere between 2-14 days and you're contagious before the onset of symptoms doesn't bode well.
I've tried to get more info on discharge rates. Of the nearly 3,000 confirmed cases, so far only about 50 odd people have recovered and been discharged. So it seems, from that, that the virus can take a long time to recover from in the best case scenario.February wins: Theatre tickets1
