The Prepping Thread - A Newer Beginning ;)

The funeral director I was learning much from yesterday thinks this is wonderful. I think it’s a bit tough on those not in the know & can see it leading to a longstanding grudge/irritation.
Still, hoping all managed to find their own & leave the chap in peace.0 -
You know UN you've just given me the best idea for ages, this autumn I'm going to gather some tree seeds and set them growing in the greenhouse, then transfer them to the allotment just for future use, the family can have the choice, I'll just be the nurturer for a little longer than I'd originally thought! many thanks.1

This prepping thread has taken a real turn. Previously we've concentrated on prepping for possible events while we're alive, now we're prepping for our demise.
Thanks for all your insights DFV, remember to be kind to yourself.Spend less now, work less later.1 -
The prepping thread is a lifesaver in all sorts of circumstances - we didn't have to leave the house for days.
Plus sometimes it helps to know that things are planned for - we get months for a newborn, but sometimes none for a death. Wouldn't you want to ensure your family could eat & had other pragmatic things already sorted?
We don't blink at car kits, or stocking up on cold remedies as the young go back to school. Even a postcard of clarity could make as helpful a difference as knowing where your passport is, or who had a flu jab when.
I will have to replace my car when it utterly fails its MOT. The budget for that is currently inadequate & the funeral will empty it. As my sweet son didn't prep, but lived & brought joy. In the midst of death, we are still in life & surrounded by so much good - just it would be easier with that postcard.0 -

It's the ultimate in prepping

I forgot to mention yesterday that the seedlings were/are native oak. Planted by forgetful squirrels. They were only a few inches high when I dug them up, any longer and you're in danger of damaging the tap root, which for an oak is quite long. Potting them will probably retard growth for a couple of years - I used pots that you'd buy roses in as they have a little depth to them

I think I found it a little cruel. Sure, for his mates it'd be a bit of a wheeze, but for others maybe a little traumatic, not faulting the guy, but I won't be doing that. In fact I've already been banned from messages from beyond he grave - little notes hidden in books etc, and I can see the point

Oh good. As they Hurt.
By all means leave letters, videos etc but not surprises. Even the we waited three days to tell you he had an extra life insurance policy - we felt like we were walking around naked after something had abraded us with a vegetable peeler. Even a nice surprise would have hit raw painful flesh. We're healing, but there is no skin graft option.
If you've any unmarried daughters, get taping the father of the bride speech(es) though. Give your womenfolk a choice as to whether they let you loose on a penned in audience...
Our lad's landlord was very nearly cross with us for not closing his account - he got paid rent automatically... So it isn't immediate family who don't like surprises.
Love the idea of rose pots for seedlings forgotten by squirrels!0 -
Hopefully retarding them for a couple of years will be a good thing as I'd like to still be around for some time to come.....please. It doesn't seem a macabre thing to me to be making decisions and even preparations for what happens after I shuffle off this mortal coil, and growing a little tree to shelter under feels really 'right' in a comforting way but 'I' won't be there in any case, the bit that is me will be away having perhaps the biggest adventure of all!1

Death is alway going to be a bit of an elephant in the room *
as we all 'know' we're going to live forever but clearly don't.
* I had a bit of brain lapse so had to resort to Wikipedia, which helpfully informed me that the Kiriwinans (near Papua New Guinea) use the word mokita which means 'truth we all know but agree not to talk about'
