The Prepping Thread - A Newer Beginning ;)

DfV, you really sound like you've got your coping hat on ... its kind of necessary until the funeral, I've found (from experience of the deaths of my elderly parents, not the catastrophic nightmare that you're living through). I hope you're eating and drinking enough.
I gave blood for years until life became a little too chaotic - when I tried to give again, they turned me away because the iron quotient of my blood would have been 1 point too low after the donation. Weird.
I have a will, and my sister and I have talked about disposal of ashes - the one thing I **don't** want, she would do, as its her failsafe - I may actually write something with a felt pen tonight, as a reminder and as a backup in case anything terrible happens tonight. Which is vanishingly unlikely, I know, but this is the prepping thread, after all2023: the year I get to buy a car1 -
Karmkat, I saw something beautiful on Treehu88er.com recently about an eco-funeral where the loved one's ashes are frozen into a block of ice, which was tastefully shaped like a smallish box, which could then be launched on a body of water, where it would melt and the ashes would sink and become one with nature.
I found that enchanting and comforting.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

And illegal ?
I've not really looked into this, but I understood the scattering of ashes was strictly controlled in the UK. I'd have mine in the garden, but then that potentially ties Mrs Un to the house. Maybe I'd occupy a nice bit of Spode
Or a flightcase
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?1 -

I found that enchanting and comforting.people just laugh about it, but I don't like the idea at all. My mum and dad's ashes are buried in a cemetery in Yorkshire, in the WWII grave of my paternal uncle - we asked permission the first time, and didn't bother the second time (which was last November). Having the ashes encased in ice would stop the whole blowing around thing.
For me, I want my ashes mixed with the ashes of my two beloved cats - so my plan of scattering on the Mersey doesn't really work ... a local ecological site might be the way forward, thats closest to my heart.2023: the year I get to buy a car1 -

I like the idea mentioned by GreyQueen (although burial with the worms is my preference) and apparently it wouldn’t need any permissions.
“Scattering ashes in the UK is legally allowed as long as you get the permission of the landowner. If you want to scatter ashes in a river or sea, there is no need to get permission”1 -
I'm going under a tree somewhere in a wood, preferably an oak but really not too fussed as long as it's native woodland stock. I don't want any fuss, any words from a priest or any music because the land will say all I need said, the tree will grow (with some help from me) and the birdsong will be a far more beautiful symphony than anything else I can imagine.1

Hoping there are several postcards dotted around where previously there were not.
Why the Army & Navy had Last Letters & didn’t encourage the idea to catch on amongst the civilians I have no idea, but to have a will form in the back of the officers paybook strikes me as pointed but practical.
I wonder if I can persuade son-with-Will to share the bones of the document around - several of his fellow apprentices have cars after all & that sort of asset needs formal paperwork to shift. He’s already recruited one lot of blood donors (& bone marrow if a match) - he’s probably fed up with me using him to reach another generation! Still, he’s hugged me & plied me with handkerchieves - I may try leaning to see how far the door may be open to spare another mum this.1 -

As we border ancient woodland we get a lot of seedlings courtesy of the squirrels (aka the skizzas). When the street tree thing kicked off here a couple of years ago I started collecting the seedlings and potting them up with the view to a little guerilla planting. I never got around to that but just before xmas did donate my stock (nearly two dozen) to the rangers who were planting saplings to fill out a few areas. So I (and Mrs Un) know where they are, without being tied to a specific tree

On the subject of funerals, did you all see the news a couple of months ago? A Dublin guy was dying of cancer, so made a little surprise for the mourners at his funeral:
