I intend to fly from Manchester but obviously will travel to any part of UK if it saves over £100 each.

As for car hire. I don't want or need a car for 3 weeks. At the most I will want it for 2 weeks. I know its a MASSIVE push to get it all for less than £2,000 but Im giving it a go. Car hire I am willing to not include within this budget.

Berrya - I would suggest doing a flydrive - my parents have done it and said it was great (both in their 50s when they did it). Then just book your own hotels/motels.

And I would recommend getting a nice hotel in Clearwater - they will be expensive but Clearwater is beautiful (have only spent 1 night there myself), get a room with a gulf view. (And go visit the Dali museum in Tampa Bay - and get the cheap bus, the guy doing it gives a talk about the town as you drive - we went all the way round on the bus)

In Orlando I should imagine that you will be doing a lot of the parks and stuff so hotel won't be as important so just stay in a motel.

Not done South Florida so can't give any tips there.

When would it be best to book a flydrive and would people suggest packaged flydrives are cheaper than just booking a flight and car hire seperate?

You cant be put off by rain. Florida is sub tropical really. The hurricanes can come from July to Sept, even last week the weather was so awful we had to bolt the garage door shut.

Last year Faye was in town and it rained for about 10 days non stop and we have to use all the other things we do in the rain up! There is lots to do when it rains so do not worry.

But the regular August weather you are talking about it as KarenG states, its an afternoon thunderstorm at anything from 3pm to 4:30 pm ish and lasts 30 misn or so. It clears the air lovely and the evening then is super.

so please do not worry too much about the rain, it does not ruin the holiday at all

    Cheers

I was there when faye hit last year, the weather was pretty bad but it didnt stop us enjoying our selves. We have been every year since 2002 at the end of august and as the guys have said, apart from daily thunderstorms (which i actually really enjoy) the weather is great.

I agree with disney_cjd with regards to the rain. THe beaut is when it does rain, yes you get wet obviously but in the summer months it's actually really refreshing when you've been walking around in the blazing heat all day! As he said, the sun then bursts through 15-30mins later and you dry off so quickly, it's unreal.

Not like the rain etc we're currently experiencing in the UK "summer" that's for sure....</grumble>

If you book direct with Disney for after 2nd August in a moderate or deluxe hotel you get free disney dining for your stay. It worked out cheaper for us to do that than to stay in a value hotel with a travel agent. Plus we now have the majority of our food paid for. Just an idea!?

Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is Disney dining ?

I ask as I have been before, going again this year, and am pondering it myself.

The thing is, if its queueing up 3 times a day for those burgers and chips ( a la McDonalds ), then I think I will pass.
