A few questions before I can offer detailed advice..... Is this your first time? If so then I have a few suggestions (same as things in previous posts but its a mind field going back over this forum for answers I know).
Car hire, if you have five people its no so much fitting those five people in a car but its the luggage space. Let me give an example, if you hire a minivan mor often than not you will get a Dodge Caravan which seats 7 in comfort. You will be lucky though to get a suitcase in teh boat if all seven are seated. So make sure you get a big enough car for the luggage.
Second thing is palces to try. There are only probably five or six rental companys. Lots of others are brokers mind you in light of the poor souls and XL sopme may be scary of brokers. However they all issue you a voucher immeadiatly and if you always pa by a credit card yo uwill be OK,. So I would ussgedt you comapre your quote against quotes scarhore.com; www.usrentacar.com or www.airlinenetwork.co.uk for a few. These4 all use either Dollar or alamo whicha re fine.
As for getting a cab, no a standard yellow cab will take 4 passengers. So you will need a van, dont worry there are lots of them around. However I would never use a cab when you can use Tiffanys for less and they will meet you at baggae claim and carry your bags for you. www.tiffanytowncars.com
Hope this helps.
As for the 11pm, thats shocking, poor you. I woud lsay that the airport is a lot quieter at night. between 4-7pm is madness but I have arrived mandy times at that time at night from my office in Chicago and its a breeze, but that does not help if you have not driven before and its dark etc.
Where is your hotel? Sometimes you can even get them to collect you (for a fee).
Cheers

Thanks for the prompt reponse. Yes its our first time in Florida and while I have driven for years and not too concerned about driving around after I get there the idea of having to do this for the first time at midnight when I will be tired doesn't appeal. I know I could get a car from the second day but I will have spent $70 getting from the airport to the hotel. We are staying at the Floridays on ID which does provide a shuttle to the parks so my driving will be limited as its mainly the parks we will be doing. Odd bit of shopping but again shuttle or trolley for that.0 -

Hi Dinglebert
let me do some digging and find where the nearest car rental place is to your hotel. What you could do is this...
Get Tiffany or another to collect you from the airport for about 40 bucks or so. Then the next day get a sherbet to the local car rental place and collect your car. You could then return it to the airport as you leave.
I post more tomorrow when I have done some digging.

No worries.
OK, so here is where you are staying (and very nice it looks too) http://www.floridaysresortorlando.com/orlando-attractions/index.cfm and is located Floridays Resort Orlando 12562 International Drive, Orlando, FL 32821
Using yescarhire.com as a guide... and then using Google maps as a location search I found this..
There is a rental pick up place on IDrive at t he Sheraton Studios on IDrive (address is 5905 International Drive, Orlando, Florida USA, 32819 ) so not a million miles away and maybe a five buck cab ride? You can collect your Alamo car from their and then return it to the airport. There is no additional charge for this.
As for the size of car, with 5 of you I would not go smaller than a FULL Size, but why not for a mini van? Loads of room and honestly the roads are so wide and parking easy its not too depressing.
I do not know what dates you are going and I have only checked one site but for instance a full size was 283 for 14 days from Oct 15 and a mini van was 336 (this is pounds btw).
So Alamo are a good option for you, when looking at the car hiore sites look for a pick up near iDrive and then a drop off at MCO which is the Orlando Airport (if you are going into Sandford then you can do that also.)
As for getting from the airport, Tiffanys quote 70 for a van one way although you can print a five dollar coupon off their site. There may be cheaper options but I doubt a cab will be. Try googling for Joes transportation, he is quite good also for pick ups.
Good luck and any questions, just shout there is loads of help available here.
All the best

i wouldntve thought so, but i've read a couple of sites saying they used their AA card for stuff whilst in the states...0 -

Hi Wayne
Is this for a hire car? If so you dont actually need it as by law US hire companies have to recover you etc etc if you breakdown.

Hi,
I am going to the US in May 09 and spending 1 week in Orlando and 1 week in Sarasota.
I am only looking to go to the Disney attractions and am a bit lost with all the choice out there. I don't imagine we will want to go to the main parks everyday, but it might be nice to go to blizzard beach or something as well or maybe a day shopping.
I would also like to get 'fast pass' or whatever they call it these days as when I went before it saved so much time.
Any thoughts on what I should go for?
Many thanks.0 -
Hi there,
There are many options for you 3 day, 5 day or 7 day are the main ones. You can buy base tickets for main parks, just water park tickets or a mix of the two. You may find out it is more cost effective to purchase a 7 day ultimate ticket as opposed to a 3 or 5 day ticket even if you arn't going to use the full 7 days. The ultimate ticket allows you access to both the 4 main parks and the 2 water parks.

That hotel looks lovely - it'll have to go on the list for next time. If/when...Aiming for that elusive 'debt free' by Christmas 2012

Flash G, you can't buy fast passes anymore, you get them for free from the ride entrance and can go back at an allocated time specified on the pass. You can only have one of these at a time though
For what it's worth I'd suggest getting the Ultimate Tickets as opposed to the Premium ones, they're only a tenner more and it gives you a lot more flexibilitity.Aiming for that elusive 'debt free' by Christmas 2012
