Good Luck. Sincerely hope more people get to do their customs charge, will save me a lot of work in the office. I have given you all a breakdown of the charges to the best of my ability. These items are taken out of mainstream mail and treated like a special delivery, fully tracked from the moment they leave the HMRC. The basic special delivery is around £5 for a letter. Try weighing your items and see if it could be sent special delivery for the £8 fee.

  • What upsets me is the time it takes to process a parcel. If something comes straight from the US without a little side journey, it takes less than a week. If my parcel hasn't arrived within a week, I know it's been caught by customs, and it'll be another 1-2 weeks before it arrives. If I'm paying £8 admin fee, I don't think they should be delaying my parcel for more than a day or at most two. I don't know if the delay is with customs or Royal Mail and I don't particularly care, I just feel that I'm paying for a service that I'm not receiving. Isn't this something Martin Lewis could start a campaign about?

As soon as RM get it from customs, it takes 1-2 days to get to the delivery office. So can't blame RM for that. Which is who you are paying the admin fee to.

  • The question is, how long does it take the sorting office to write and deliver the card saying you owe them money? My latest parcel came through Parcelforce rather than Royal Mail, it was posted on 1st July in the US and I had a letter this morning from Parcelforce (delivered by Royal Mail!!) telling me how much was owed and how to pay, plus I had a choice of going to collect it or waiting for delivery. The Royal Mail parcel was posted on 24th June in the US and I got the card from my postie on 8th July - that's about a week slower than Parcelforce :(

PF is a courier.dealing in far lower volumes of items and all of their international items are tracked from source and sent via priority services.
RM deals with far more items requiring far more sorting
once an item comes ot the delivery office in the 'charge pouch' then the card should be filled that day and delivered the next
it used to be they would be sent out the same day but theres no time/staff for that now
why not call RM CS and request they do a full audit trail on the items tracking
then you can see where any delays occured

I've just been caught by this rip off too.

Guess I'll just use email and fax until I've recouped my £8.00. At least we have a choice to avoid RM for general letters and correspondence.

No choice unfortunately from this supplier so I have to take the extortion on the chin. However wherever I can I will now make sure that RM does not get my business.
