Hi all just after a bit of advice my mum's looking into getting a tesco sim card as it seems there doing offers on free air time so if she tops it up by £15 they'll give her £30 free.Ive seen alot of Asda threads about there payg sims but not alot on Tesco's sim Asda have the cheapest text & call rate but is it better value over Tesco?

I would say that on some of the topups Tesco works out cheaper than ASDA apart from the data (web browsing) part. ASDA 20p per MB, Tesco £4.00 per MB divided by 2 or 3,depending on how much you top up.

    It all depends on use
ASDA is 8p / 4p for calls / SMS and Tesco is 20p / 10p. The Tesco free credit lasts just 1 month

    So topping up £10 pm
ASDA 125min OR 250txt OR combination like 80min+90txt
    Tesco (£10+£10) is 100min OR 200txt OR 70min+60txt

Higher top ups show Tesco better (e.g. £15 pm)
    ASDA 187min OR 375txt
    Tesco (£15+£30) 225min OR 450txt

But if you are spending £15+ then PAYG may not be the best, the sim-only deals (30 day rolling contract) might be better
    Orange Dolphin 15 200min + unlimited text (or Raccoon 15 : 300min, 100txt + unlimited calls to landline)
    O2 simplicity 15 200min AND 400txt

and whether your calling one of 5 favourite numbers (Tesco Payg)

EG : Tesco £10+£10 is 200 minutes or 400 texts when calling/texting favourite numbers.

Carphone Warehouse are offering the Motorola W180 at £4.95 plus a complulsory £10 Orange top-up. However the phone is NOT locked to Orange. The salesman told me this plus the one I bought works with O2. The phone is quite pretty with basic functions, but includes a radio and speaker phone. It also has Motorola "crystal talk" technology which helps audibility in noisy situations. If you buy it online via the Quidco cashback website you should get another £5 from them eventually. This is a nice phone, ideal as a pressie for the technophone relation, as a reserve, or a throwaway for people like builders who go through a lot of handsets
  • Further to my posting above about the Motorola W180 I purchased one and would recommend it. it is easy to use and has a good battery life and audibility, and looks smart. Texting is a bit slow though
  • I'm in the USA visiting family and called into a local phone supply store where the Apple IPhone 3G 8mg is selling for $199 (128 UK pounds).

Contacted UK suppliers with a view to purchase on my return next week...guess what? Yes! ...the EXACT same IPhone is priced at $503...wow!

Asked the UK supplier why (by e-mail) and was told "this is the UK not the USA, we price accordingly".

Rip off Britain eh? I wonder what Martin makes of this?

Now £2.88 plus £10 top up
  • Just negotiated a new mobile phone contract following the advice off the site and I now get 600 mins / 1000 txts / (un)limited internet / wifi access / £150 credit to my account all for £20 a month after holding out for the best deal by threatening to leave O2.

I have entered another 18 month contract but i'm happy with their service so that isnt an issue.

Hi all! I was thinking about getting second hand first, generation, unlocked 'iphone' to mainly use for internet access via with wifi. I was going to partner this with a cheap 'payg' sim card of my choice, which I've yet to purchased.

My question is, is this set up possible? Also how do I go about just purchasing a sim card?

    Thanks
