A couple of years ago I reported one thread where the OP, a newish poster, had some very clear mental issues, contributed over half of the posts in a thread of over 400 posts and where the replies became more and more bullying in nature and the whole thing made me fear for the wellbeing of the OP in real life. I never contributed to that thread myself due to the OP's issues.

Other than that I have never even considered reporting anything nor understood why anyone else would.

I would love to hear from someone who believes that repeatedly "running to teacher" is the best response whenever their snowflakeish sensibilities are challenged along with their reasoning for doing so.

Can't see that happening unless a wind up merchant turns up.

I, and others, reported a regular troll on the benefits board because they were giving, potentially, misleading and damaging information - and taking over threads with their own agenda.

I don't like doing it but sometimes you have to. I moderate on another forum and it isn't easy. You get some folks messaging you to tell you that you MUST delete or moderate a thread - and an equal number telling you that you MUST leave it as it is.

As others have said MSE is a private website and, like it or not, they can set their own rules.

Doh it is frustrating... one I wrote on yesterday and last night has gone.. I had specifically said in it I hoped it stayed up as it would have been useful to refer to on debates about disabled and employment.

If it's the thread I posted on, maybe they didn't like me saying that I hear many people in society called scum by certain more privileged members of society, but the truth of the matter is, the real scum are those who think like the OP

I did it because that's what I honestly thought (and still think), and I knew me taking any more time debating with the OP was a futile waste of time and I realised (before I posted my comment) that the chances of the thread still being here today was zero.

I've only ever reported one thread, and that was a thread I started in the Employment and Jobseeking section., when I was severely ill with depression and other health issues, and many of the judgmental comments were physically making me worse. Normally I would never ever report anything, but some of the personal attacks in that thread when my mind was in the state it was, and I was simply asking for advice, well, it was a thread started by me for advice by me, and due to my state of mind, I asked for the thread to be deleted (and it was).

Another thread of mine on the benefits section was closed, that may well have been the thread MackMister reported, and at the time I was in no fit state to post really, and the replies were making my mental health a lot worse. So whoever got that shut, good for them.

But it's one thing asking for a "help" thread you've created to be removed, or being concerned about someones mental health, and it's another altogether when we can't discuss current things in discussion time.

If someone is for example a racist, I would rather debate with them than them never ever allowed to say what they think, that just drives them underground and they end up meeting other silenced individuals, and rather than help change their attitudes, i believe it gives them more reason to think their opinion is right.

It's getting that we can't say anything anymore because some one will be offended
The way things are going, soon we are all going to be victims of something or other.

    Who will we blame then?

No, never reported a thread or poster or post, and never will. If I've got nothing to say or a thread doesn't interest me, I just don't go on it, rather than whinge and report. I'm virtually impossible to offend, and whilst I appreciate not everyone is the same, I do sometimes think some need to get a backbone and stop taking things so personally. If a thread is getting to you, then walk away, but don't ruin it for others by reporting it.
  • Remember the thread "coping with depression and life"? That got binned and no matter how many times they were asked and no matter how many places they were asked in, the mods never answered anyone as to why they binned it, disgusting.

The line Martin and the mods frequently trot out of "if you report it it'll be deleted" is a lie. Threads accusing innocent people of being terrorists have stayed up after being reported, so there's clearly an agenda on this site.

I've reported threads on the DFW board or the bancrupcy one where people were judgemental (it's a shame these posts also appear on the "new posts" search)..

I report threads quite often, purely because of the boards I visit the most.

When the regular benefit troll returns and is giving terrible advice just to get a reaction of course I'm going to report him, the alternative is people potentially losing out on benefits they're entitled to if they take his 'advice'.

I do report judgemental posts on the benefit board because they're against forum policy (there's a big sign at the top that it's for advice and not judgement) and people posting there are often very vulnerable and a nasty post could tip them over the edge.

I report people giving medical advice as it's against the forum rules. I did this last week when someone gave a lot of medical advice, and it was only the previous day that it had been in the news about how dangerous it is to do what was being suggested (obviously I'm not going to give details!)

I've reported posters who have obviously been baiting people with mental health difficulties who are asking for advice on the benefits or disabilities board.

I don't report people who are personally nasty to me.

I don't report people for having a different point of view to me.

It's very rare that I report someone on DT or the Arms. The last time was when someone was quoting posts from elsewhere on the board, the poster being quoted was clearly in a fragile state and having parts of their posts selectively quoted to put them in a bad light when they were completely oblivious to it seemed really wrong to me. That was in January.

I hit the spam button when it's obvious spam. Who wants the boards clogged with 'fake ID' threads?

    Trigger warning:
Perhaps I'm over sensitive - I've tried to kill myself before because of posts on a forum, I've self harmed because of posts on this forum. I'd rather a few posts got deleted because of erring on the side of caution than someone go through what I did.

(spoiler obviously not the right word but it's the easiest way to hide part of a post).
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

I've seen threads by obviously seriously mentally unwell people where they've been told by other posters to kill themselves. You're saying that I shouldn't have reported those posts but told the OP to get a backbone?

The poor and inconsistent moderation is why I'm an occasional visitor only nowadays.
Simply proper moderation isn't something MSE want to pay employees to do.
