Just to answer a previous persons question, because I had the same confusion - I believe the difference between an electric and power shower is:

Electric shower - single mains cold feed and is heated by the unit

Power shower - this type needs cold water cistern and a hot water cylinder feed

So in our place I know we need an electric shower - now I was intending to wire and plumb this myself having done it before when replacing an older unit in a previous house. However I was recently told that this job now has to be donw by a corgi registered engineer. Is this correct? Is it worth me fitting the installation and just getting it checked over by a corgi eng?

Ian, thanks for your time and this is a great idea!

  • Hi Ian,

I have a problem with the drain in my bathroom sink. It smells really bad...!! In fact the smell (at times) is so overpowering it can take over my whole flat.

I've tried pouring a liquid drain cleaner, bleach, and even toilet cleaner down it to get tid of it...but to no avail. I clean the trap quite often, so I know it isn't that.

    Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks (I hope)!!

  • Hi Ian

My brother has fitted my bathroom in and all is fine but both my hot and cold taps if left on run boiling hot water and no cold :(
Do you know what the problem could be?

    Hi Ian,

I live in a Victorian terraced house and have recently discovered that the bathroom basin is attached to the header tank and not directly to the mains. We have, of course, been drinking from this tap for 6 months or more :( I have called a couple of plumbers about how to make the water drinkable but am getting mixed advice. Some say that if they switched it over to mains there would be an "imbalance" of some sort and that in short they would have to replace the whole system possibly including the boiler!. What is the best thing to do that does not cost the Earth?

P.S. The boiler is a conventional sort with a hot water tank next to the bathroom.
  • We have a tap which although the insides have been changed still refuse to flow - the stopcocks in the loft have been checked and are fine and fully on but the taps still refuses to give anything but a drip Any ideas
    Thank you

HI Ian, unusal here, i know the problem and solution but need advice on the best product.

My waste pipe directly under my sink is not screwed in, it was glued in place, are there any adhesives you would recommend that could do the job effectively.

    Thanks

I want to install a shower over my bath but my bathroom has been tiled fully to ceiling and I don't want to smash the tiles up.

What's the best way to install a shower?
    (1) Break tiles and fit electric shower under plaster (how much would this cost?)
    (2) Run off taps
    (3) Run chrom pipes up wall (so it doesn't look too bad)

What do people tend to do? I'm not sure on my best option. I have a combi boiler in kitchen.
  • Hi Ian
I have 2 questions.1/ To use compression fittings with poly pipe do you need to use metal rather than plastic pipe inserts? 2/ I want to fit a garden tap but the kit from B&Q only has a 15mm self cutter is it possible to buy a 22 mm self cutter?
For those who have had problems with dirty hot water i had the same problem a few years ago and it turned out to be the electric water heater element in the cylinder which was rusty due to being bent when it was installed. Hope this helps.

    More plumbing problems...

My toilet flushes OK, but the cistern takes ages to fill up again, we live in an area renowned for limescale problems - I think this is the cause, but don't know how to resolve it... any ideas?

    Many thanks

    Hi Ian

I have an electric shower in my flat (one of the basic Mira ones) and when I turn the dial off it often stays on for up to 30 seconds after I turn the dial, going cold in the process. I have fairly high pressure water in my flat, so could it be something to do with this? (the water comes out of the shower at a 'normal' rate though) Or is there likely to be some sort of washer in the unit that has gone or something entirley different?

Thanks for giving up some of your time for this - much appreciated by all I am sure.

    Naomi
