  • Hi Ian,

I have a shower cubical with a hinged door. The furr (brush seal) along the length of the hinge side and the small seal between the brush seal (up stand) and the hinge along the bottom have worn resulting in the water streaming from the bottom corner of the door and finding its way to the ceiling below. I am in the process of getting replacement seals, but is this a simple job, or should an expert be enlisted for the job?

    Thanks very much.

    Paul.
  • I've had a new bathroom fitted and the water in the sink doesn't flow as it should, in fact it takes ages to go! We have flushed the pipe through with a power jet etc. and there is no debris there. Is it because the pipe goes down and then horizontally along to meet up with the bath waste pipe? This problem has really spoilt all the pleasure that a new bathroom should bring to me.

Your help would be much appreciated
  • We have a Corinthian Triflow (8 yrs old). A ceramic washer needs replacing but can we get the cover off !?!?!?! We have unscrewed the lever but we cannot get the cover off without apparently causing damage. Any tricks of the trade please?

There is a "stagnant" smell coming from our shower waste. Water runs away with no problem and no pipes/drains are blocked. Would you have any ideas about the cause?

Can you tell me any way of identifying Ceramic quarter turn bath tap inserts please? I have a dripping tap and none of the plumbing suppliers can obtain replacement inserts unless I can tell them the maker. Internet search has shown up dozens, all non-standard sizes, threads and splines!!

UPDATE NOTE There have been an overwhelming number of questions asked. Too many for an individual answer to each. Therefore I'm going to ask Archna (MoneySaving researcher) to put together an amalgum of all the questions into about 20 individual questions covering as much ground as possible and will ask Ian to answer those.

I hope this is ok - i didnt quite realise the demand this would create. Now I know it works, i will look to do it in other areas, but perhaps organise it differently.

My hot water system was drained off this week so that a thermostat could be put on one of the radiators, and also so that insulation could be fitted behind it. All went well, but since then the central heating hasn't worked. The boiler ignites briefly, but then cuts out totally. What has gone wrong please Ian, and how can it be fixed?

My central heating has will only heat the hot water in the tank when the heating system is on
If i only switch the hot water side on the heating control nothing happens ie no hot water
Ihave the same problem - it's a triple valve which has broken down - I'm on my third, and now that has gone. I only get hot water when the heating is on; the water switch lights up when I put it on, but doesn't work.

Hi Ian, I have aproblem with my heating system, when I switch it on it sounds like the Mines of Moria, in Lord of the Rings. It only does it on heating, not on water, which leads me to suspect my pipes are blocked or blocking. I have a back Baxy bck boiler, with a mix of 1/2" and micro bore pipes. Is there a way i can clear them?
  • Hello Ian
We have had a dual flush (6litre/3litre) continental style valve flush toilet fitted instead of our old traditional syphon-type.
I undertand that the valves are prone to leakage, and it appears that this is happening - a trickle of water into the pan after the flush has finished.

My question is, how do I stop the valve leaking? Can I do this myself or do I need a plumber?

    many thanks
