the mains inlet stopcock to my property has a slow leak - it drips out of the tap spindle - i can also turn the water off outside the house at the mains - the stopcock is a brass tap (painted over) - can i take the tap off and stop the leak by changing a washer or part of the tap?
  • We need to flush our radiator system and need to add some new inhibitor, the inhibitor states that it is for use in an indirect heating system. What is an indirect heating system? Our boiler is a gloworm 24CXI. Many thanks for you time (great idea Martin - thanks as usual!!) Wendy
  • Hiya - this may be more a boiler thing but worth a shot :o )

At the moment everytime my loo flushes, the combi boiler fires up! It is a Vaillant combi that, slowly but surely, loses pressure during the day. I am guessing that there is a leak from the pipework coming from the boiler - the pipes are under some concrete screed and that is damp.

    What do you reckon?
    a) boiler needs replacing?
    b) redo the pipework from the boiler?
    c) not waste the warm water and wash my hands in the loo bowl ?!

    thanks H

As of Jan 1 2005 New Electrical Regulations came into effect that effectively preclude DIY work in Bathrooms unless subsequently a certificate of compliance is obtained.
I've recently had a new bathroom "professionally" installed and cannot get the certificate as the Certifying Engineer says that he cannot see any earth bonding of the water pipes/ radiator system.
He states that all earth bonding must be visible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This I do not believe as that precludes the fitment of enclosed bath panels and would require a visible bond in the shower cubicle.
What I believe he means is that he should have been present when the bonding was applied, i.e. before any closures were installed.
Do you agree with my interpretation?
    Thanks GtB
  • Hi,
We moved into our new house just over a year ago and we were dismayed to find out that our outside tap no longer works. I con't think of anything that has changed it just doesn't flow water through it anymore. I tried to look for blockages by taking the tap apart and flushing it with water to no avail. Anyway we called a plumber out and he's meant to be coming this afternoon with a new tap. Do we need a new tap and the plumber or is there anything we can do ourselves?
    Many thanks for you help

    Hi Ian
my dishwasher is quite a bit away from my sink/drainage and there is a smell of stale water coming from the cupboard next to it. I believe the wast pipe runs behind this cupboard, what can I do to get rid of the smell?

Hi Ian, i'd like to get an outside tap fitted - it would only need to go from the mains which comes up in the kitchen right next to the wall, through to the outside of the wall so the run of the pipe I guess would only need to be 1 or 2 feet. Could you give me any idea (even rough ballpark) on how much this should cost me?

    Many thanks

My toilet is slow to drain, I.E. after flush water level in the bowl rises alarmingly then slowly drains away to its normal remainder level. More strangely when left for a long time without a flush the remaining water in the bowl also drains away ??
The floor around the toilet is dry and toilets further down the sewer drain ok.
I thought it was just a simple U bend affair, so how on earth is the remaining water draining , some sort of syphonic action ?
    thanks

    Hi Ian,

Like several of the other posters, my hotwater tank's started to give me slightly dirty water - we had our water cut off a couple of weeks ago, so is this likely to clear itself eventually?
Pre O/S: what's a vitamin? Does it begin with the letter e?Now: I'm not eating any of that pre-made rubbish...
  • Hi

I have a leak from what appears to be my dirt pipe, this is located in my loft as my bathroom is in the centre on my house. Can you advise me the best and cheapest way to fix this problem?

    Thanks
