Dear Ian
Our toilet cistern does not always fill up after again after flushing. If we turn the cold tap on the wash basin on and off several times, it will then fill. We do not seem to be able to get into the cistern it seems to be sealed (it was new 2 years ago - a Roco) - is this normal?
Also when I put powder in the washing machine dispenser, there is always about half of it left behind.
Are the two problems connected? Do you think it's a water pressure problem?
I'd be greatful for any advice.
Best regards

Hi Ian,
I'm just finishing the first year of a 2 year plumbing NVQ/Technical Certificate at night school. The problem i have is all i'm doing at the moment is what i do at college. I really need some practical experience "on the job" but dont know how to get it is im not sure im confident enough to advertise my services alone and can only do weekends and certain evenings as i work full time at the moment.
Any suggestions on how i can start building up my experience.
Thanks

I've just had my 5* yearly inspection by the Gas board and they tell me my system needs a "flush"......the guys at work reckon this is a bit of a scam and it is an easy DIY project with a hosepipe! Anyway, the gas board want to charge 500 quid for the pleasure....do you think this is fair or just an easy way to make money? How mcuh do you think a 'real' plumber would charge?0 -
Hi Ian
My basin mixer tap in the bathroom makes a terrible noice when water flows through it, especially if the tap is only half / partly on. We have good water pressure in the house which i assume is the cause of the problem but is there anything I can do to cure the awful noise e.g. new taps?
Thanks0 -
Hi there Moneysavers,
Firstly the site is great for helping run your everyday life AND saving money.
Q. I have a Megaflow 170 litre hot water cylinder and seem to be losing pressure. How can I raise the pressure to ensure my hot water reaches the upstairs bathroom at maximum pressure?0 -
Hi Ian
Wow - haven't you had a lot of questions asked already? (Says me, asking another one before I've even started!)
I want to move my washing machine into the garage to create a little extra storage space in my kitchen. From what I can tell, I have water pipes in the garage, as this is where the boiler is housed. What I want to know is, what do I do about drainage? I know that I can't just let the water drain out anywhere because of regulations, but how difficult (and expensive) would it be to put in proper drainage and do whatever needs doing to the pipes to plumb the washing machine in?
Thanks in advance!0 -
At the end of last year we had a condensing combination boiler installed to replace our previous boiler and hot water tank arrangement. Helpfully, the guy that did it has now disappeared!
The problem we're having is that it takes a number of efforts to fire up. This happens on a morning when the central heating comes on and also when we run taps or the shower. It seems to help if you only partly open the tap instead of running it at full, but it can take up to a dozen times for the thing to fire and hot water to appear. It does sound like it's doing something and then at the point of ignition it shuts down.
Is there anything we can adjust (water pressure, fiddly things on the front)? The catch is that the plumber didn't leave us a Corgi certificate and now we can't get hold of him we're not sure what to do. Can we get one of these retrospectively? We were planning to have it serviced after a year anyway.
Any help much appreciated.

I have an outside tap coming from the plumbing under the kitchen sink.
Last year, the water pressure from the outside tap was fine. However when I went to use it again this year, the water pressure had dropped significantly. The water pressure from the kitchen taps are still fine and as before.
We have no idea why this is so no idea how to fix it. Do you have any suggestions on the cause and a solution?
Thank you.0 -
Our new-build house has radiators fitted with individual thermostats, except the one in the entrance hall. This one makes horrendous whooshing noises as water flows through it. We have tried bleeding every radiator but the noise persists. Not sure if this is relevant but we have a pressure system, which needs to be re-pressurised about once a week. Any ideas please? :think:0

Brilliant idea this...
I have two questions - I moved into my new-build house 6 months ago but only recently discovered that my bath is draining very slowly, i.e. it took 12 hours for it to empty after a bubbly soak one night! I've tried standard plug unblockers, including ones for slow-running pipes, to no avail - any suggestions?
And number two - both my dishwasher and washing machine are connected to the pipes under my sink. Around a connection at bottom of the pipe - spot the technical terms! - water is seeping out, particularly when the washing machine is on. Do I need to try to disconnect the whole jobby and just tighten things (I've tightened the connector as best I can already) or is there a sealant or something I can put round the connection?
Thank you very much!0
