SMETS 1 Meters - No More

    1) SMETS 1 meters in PPM mode can still be installed until 15th March 2019
    2) Some suppliers have a derogation from BEIS which allows them to install a set amount of extra SMETS 1 credit meters after the 5th December 2018
    3) There is nothing to stop a supplier installing SMETS 1 meters after the 5th December although it won't count towards their roll out targets. However if suppliers have left over stock they are likely to install them anyway especially in the North where SMETS 2 coverage issues remain
What exactly are these Northern issues?

My understanding from press reports is that there are some technical connectivity issues with The Data Communication Company's chosen communications partner in the North - Arqiva.

I had a phone call on Thursday saying that they were calling on behalf of my energy supplier to install smart meters. I then informed them they were no longer my supplier as I had switched a couple of weeks ago. I was thanked and told they would update their information. Hopefully no more calls for a while :)

It would seem that The Data Communications Company has a different view. Reported in another industry journal:

Quote: With BEIS having confirmed that approximately 47,000 SMETS2 devices were already been installed by the end of September 2018, a spokesperson for the DCC assured: “Our secure data network is fully operational and open for installations of SMETS2 meters and we continue to support energy suppliers on their rollout.” Unquote

Today’s Daily Telegraph has different information on the SMETS2 deployment number:

Quote The new type of meter, which will be connected to a national communications network to allow easy switching between energy providers, was initially supposed to be widely used from July. But that date has twice been pushed back and, so far, only about 26,000 have been installed, according to figures from industry analysts ElectraLink. Unquote

I am guessing but I suspect that the 21,000 difference is down to the fact that BEIS is allowing suppliers to count SMETS1 meters towards their SMETS2 rollout targets. The Government wouldn’t tell porkies, would it:(

Differences between SMETS1 and SMETS2 is the data network. SMETS2 use the DCC run by Centrica. Not all SMETS1 will go dumb
With British Gas, for example, SMETS1 meters will only continue to operate if you join from EDF, Scottish Power, Spark, SSE or The Co-operative Energy.

And it seems that the rate of installations is slowing down
Separately, statistics released in August showed that the rollout has lost momentum at exactly the time it should be speeding up. About 1.25 million smart meters were fitted in the second quarter of 2018, up just 1% on the previous quarter.

Installations have only just passed the 13 million mark – a long way from the 53 million there would be if every household and business had one.

Embarrassingly, about 940,000 have lost their smart functionality after people switched supplier – meaning consumers once again have to manually submit readings.

As those derogations were issued in March 2018 when the end date for SMETS1 was October 6th and the end date is now 5th December, can one assume that the Utility Cos. will get even more leeway than the 13th Jan 2019 to continue installing SMETS1 ??:(

Npower reckon that they are coming to install mine (SMETS1 I'm sure!) on the 25th, but they can't as I won't confirm it.;)
I tried to cancel online through my account as I don't want one, and it refuses to let me, and insists that I have to phone them.

I suppose I could try and re-schedule for March 2019, but as above, they will probably get derogation extended..

No doubt they will soon be be ringing me, or even sending someone to bother me in person on the 25th.

    We shall see......

And they reckon on ONE HOUR per meter to install :rotfl:
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
