There are many people who don't have iPhones, etc, and don't wish to have them, though most do have simple mobiles for the convenience of making phone calls.
There's no requirement to have "iPhones, etc" to have a mobile telephone number, which is what they are asking for.

As ColdIron says, they say the number is just needed to verify your identity. But I don't know how that works.

I've never needed to provide a mobile number to verify my identity, in any financial transaction with any organisation. Most ask for a landline number so they can contact you if necessary, and I'd have thought that would be enough.

Have you tried just entering a landline number instead when applying ?

I just phoned them and they said you have to give a mobile phone number to open the account. I said thank you and I would therefore decline opening one.
    They'll be inconsolable, no doubt.

It's not uncommon, off the top of my head Santander require a mobile number so that they can send you an OTP (One Time Password) via SMS to verify new payees. SMS messages can be very handy to authorise payments by replying with a 'Y' rather than having to phone up the fraud department. I'm pretty fussy with my personal details, don't use banking apps etc but view SMS as a convenience and a fact of modern day life

There is no way a mobile number can be used for ID verification.

They don't, at least presently, send any texts to your mobile to confirm deposits or withdrawals, or anything. They'll probably just want a number to contact people on if they need to contact them.

There is also no way they could possibly verify whether the number you give them is actually yours.

I assume you're talking about a flexiIsa? Who is the 1%?
And yes if the terms don't mention anything about losing the bonus for a w/d you wouldn't lose the 0.15% bonus.
Yes, flexiISA. Nationwide, and just seen it's now 1.10%. I know there are better rates around but it's where I bank and I'm a bit lazy.

You're probably right. You can give them a landline number too, as an alternative. For some of us the quickest way to contact us is usually on the landline (a text usually takes several days to reach me, although I can pick up a voicemail via wifi and my Hullomail app). I know we're in a minority, but for those of us who don't have a mobile signal at home it's frustrating when banks don't give you an alternative (Santander and Bank of Cyprus are two I've come across). And don't get me started on getting my landline fixed when that goes down!
