Just wondered. Do you have to provide a mobile phone number? I don't give out such details generally and don't wish to start now.

Think so, they say they need it to verify your identity. From the application page:

    You'll need to:
    • Be aged 18 or over.
    • Have a UK address, and be resident in the UK for tax purposes.*
    • Provide the sort code and account number of your UK current account.
    • Have a UK mobile phone number.

Thank you for the quick response. I think I will pass on this 'offering', then (I won't do any banking or financial transactions on a mobile, or give access to my number to anyone but friends).

There are many people who don't have iPhones, etc, and don't wish to have them, though most do have simple mobiles for the convenience of making phone calls.

The hold up is likely to be from the bank you're sending money from. A small test payment followed by a large payment will likely trigger a fraud warning.

I had my call earlier. :)

You don't have to use your mobile. Your PC / tablet / laptop etc will be perfectly fine.

I did notice they don't do an app. Not the end of the world but also not exactly modern banking.

I just phoned them and they said you have to give a mobile phone number to open the account. I said thank you and I would therefore decline opening one.

I don't do any banking on my mobile either (mobiles are too easily lost). But although I had to give them my mobile number it wasn't needed to log in or make a deposit or make a withdrawal. It's possible that they sent me a text to alert me of the withdrawal, but I won't know until I go somewhere with a mobile signal (maybe in a few days time).

As ColdIron says, they say the number is just needed to verify your identity. But I don't know how that works.
