I have just looked at this and reckon that there is a connection with Brexit and the disappearance of the EU maroon passport. I was planning to renew mine a little early but, with this change, I would lose a whole year's validity.0

In fairness, one of those threads was asking about early passport renewal and the other flagged up the fact that no months are now added on if you renew early.0 -

How? What on earth would this have to do with Brexit? If anything you'd have thought we'd have been forced stop this sooner as we're they only EU country to offer it.

checking on the page today, this has been removed.0
