  • My brother describes things like "COOK" above the oven, "EAT" above the dining table and "BATHE" above the bath as subtitles for the hard of thinking.

I knew someone who had twee faux wooden (yep, not even real wood) letters that spelled out LIVE LOVE LIFE on a shelf all to themselves. A combination of crossword solver and mischief maker compelled me to rearrange them slightly one day to read EVIL VOLE FILE. It was like that for weeks before she noticed. I, chivalrous as ever, denied all knowledge.

Oh you just reminded me of the candles in jars that have letters on. Usually to be found arranged in mostly four letter swear words in local toot emporia. Maybe it's an Essex thing.

In my experience, those with 'LIVE LAUGH LOVE' emblazoned all over the hop-pit, are the most miserable of people.
Not once have I heard my cousin laugh, she loathes everything, and as for her sh*t life she's always going on about......she's got the stencils though so that must be helping!
  • "subtitles for the hard of thinking" - genius!

This thread has restored my faith in human nature and good taste - I thought I was the only one who hated this trend! I've hated it ever since plates and table mats with things like Nibble, Chomp, Slurp written on became popular, ugh
  • It's a trend.
Go in any branch of Dunelm Mills and you will see the words 'live laugh love' emblazoned on almost everything.

Latest things are wooden carved words for your (well, not mine) bathroom shelf.......'soak' is a popular one.

    Can't stand the sentiment myself.

I notice they don't have words for other things you might do in the bathroom :)

    I too hate this trend.

For the authentic 80s effect it's essential your avocado toilet is in a carpeted bathroom with a matching bidet alongside it :D

We had an avocado bathroom suite and a carpeted bathroom in the '80s - the carpet (pub style) went up the side of the bath :rotfl::rotfl:

    No bidet though :)

  • Come to think of it, there could be a new trend in more realistic stickers.
All mugs and glasses could have SPILL on the side.
Vacuum cleaners could be emblazoned with SUCK IT UP
    Above the cooker, BURN
Above the table, for people with small children, DEVELOP FADDY HABITS
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

but I'm constantly seeing signs and stencils on walls - L-O-V-E - and short pithy platitudes about home and heart and so on. Is this a design trend that I've missed, or are estate agents/specialists putting these up in sellers' houses to make them more attractive?

It's sellers on a low budget going to their local poundshops trying to look classy.

Sorry if I sound like a snob!

Personally I look past that, as the house will be filled with your stuff, not their tat.

its because people like tat and shop in poundland, B & M and home bargains to get it.

And lets not start on everything should be grey or have mirrored furniture. Or those that have ropes of led lights up the stairs!!!!

Look past all the tat and think about what you could do with the place yourself.

    Good luck

  • ..and another thing - we are looking at 3 bed houses in Oxon/Wilts/Northamptonshire and about 80% of the properties have a guitar (or three) in the photos.

I asked our agent whether it was a trend when they came to take our photos and he pointed out the 3 guitars in my son's bedroom!
