It possibly wont to individual tools who choose to drive excessively fast but its likely to slow the average speeders who will be causing the majority of the problems.
Did you really need this explaining to you?

No, inappropriately low speed limits just brings the law into disrepute and more people will ignore them.

If self-driving cars eventually materialise, I wonder how people will feel about always sticking to the limit, not flooring it off the lights, stopping on amber, not hogging the middle lane etc etc.
Just because we'll see autonomous vehicles on the road doesn't mean everyone will want one. I for one enjoy driving my car and I wont be giving that up anytime soon.

it will remain even though it was only supposed to be a trial

Just like the trial of 70mph in the mid 1960s!

One assumes the results of the trial were favourable so the 70mph limit remained.

Ignoring the poor driving standard of the speeding drivers who fail to recognise or just ignore the restricted view and drive at an appropriate speed.
If the village is anything like one in Lincolnshire which was on the local news a few years ago the majority of those getting caught by the camera will be the villagers who campaigned for it.

I have been caught once in 39 years of driving (Bikes / Cars) on a separated dual carriageway which was 50 mph limit and was then reduced to 30 mph when they built a small private school on the road.
The school has been closed for around 4 years now and the site is empty but the 30 mph limit remains for no other reason that I can see other than making money from drivers.

I asked about removing a bollard close to where I live as it was repeatedly being damaged and repaired and damaging cars. It serves no purpose and others nearby had been removed over previous years. As it was within about 100 meters of a school entrance the procedure for removing it was extensive, much more than simply removing a bollard. Its likely your speed limit is the same.

Have you asked about changing the limit?

    Too true.

Everyone in my village complains about the speed people drive through it. The other day I had to follow some fellow villagers somewhere (four cars in total) - they all drove through our village at a steady 40-45mph.

Twice on the 10min journey they had to pull over and wait for me.

Later that day over a beer, the subject of speeding came-up and they all had a moan. And this is the problem; it's that people don't realise that they're speeding - it's everyone else, not them. And when they're caught, the excuses come:

"Well there wasn't anyone working on the roadworks, so I thought it was ok"
"That road used to be a 50. Didn't realise it was now a 40"
"I was overtaking safely, how else was I supposed to overtake?"
"I literally never speed, they just happened to get me"
"What harm is a few mph over the limit? They should be out catching real criminals"
"I was just following the flow of traffic" etc etc

Speed limits are set by the highway authority, which receives no money from fines.

Its about perspective. A few years ago I had an unexpected 300 mile motorway drive where I needed to get there by a certain time. At a constant 90mph I was bored enough to wonder what its like standing on the central reservation when being passed at that speed. Totally different perspective. Motorists are cocooned in a relatively surreal world while driving which makes many complacent.
