Hold my hands up. Stupid and reckless. Had my NIP sent through, sent back and now just waiting for the punishment. Any idea what the likely outcome is? This is my first offence, been driving for 5 years and I know the speeding laws have now changed into bands. Is it going to be a hefty fine?

Perhaps you would like to explain yourself.

You got off lightly - only £100 and I believe 3 points doesn't really make any noticeable difference to insurance premiums.

In future make sure you only speed in places where you're sure there are no speed cameras
Are you aware that encouraging someone to commit a crime is itself a crime?

That's what I used to think, but I've realised I'm wrong. The majority of people actively support speeding so, like Brexit, it's the will of the people.

In my experience, most drivers speed. And many by a large margin. In fact, I read recently that something like only 14% of drivers adhere to a 20mph limit. That's 86% that actively and demonstrably support speeding.

Speed cameras are bright yellow to give you extra warning. Cars can be legally fitted with devices that warn you of their location. When a mobile speed camera is in our village, I know because every car is frantically flashing me to warn other drivers and ensure they don't get caught. And if you do get caught, there's a change you'll be offered a speed awareness course (because apparently people might not be aware that you're not allowed to speed).

There is so much from all sides to support speeding, who am I to say they're wrong?
You mean you realised that trolling this forum with your anti-speed rhetoric and jumping on any thread that mentioned speed wasn't getting you anywhere, so now you're changing tact ;)

Exactly. There's no point in fighting against it. People like to speed, people want to speed, people even argue that speed doesn't kill.

I'm sure the police will be knocking on my door any second...

Technically it is the stopping suddenly that's the problem.

    Not again. Please.

"Majority of people" meaning some motorists. Ignoring speed limits is not the same as "actively supporting speeding"

Most motorists exceed limits by a small margin which is generally tolerated. Most motorists also sulk like children when forced to slow down.
Fortunately speed limits are set and enforced for the safety of all road users and not by mob rule by a minority who put themselves first.
  • "Majority of people" meaning some motorists.

In my experience, it's most motorists.

Near me, a section of the motorway drops to 50mph (I think because of a fault with the central barrier) and, as there are no cameras, almost all other drivers continue at 70-80mph. Even lorries overtake me for those few miles.

Driving through villages near me, if you dare go at 30mph, you're likely to have someone driving inches from your rear bumper and then be overtaken at the earliest opportunity. And through the night, it's fair game. Last night walking back from a friends at about midnight, a Royal Mail lorry drove past us easily doing 50mph. And he's a professional.

People only stick to the speed limit when they think there's a chance of being caught. And considering that chance is very low and getting lower, speeding is becoming more widespread.

It's the will of the people. They don't mind the risk speeding poses to them or their friends and family, so why should I care?

Nothing like a thread like this to bring out the great moralisers spouting about the evils of speeding. Of course it can be dangerous but many speed limits are completely arbitrary. The reasonable 20mph limit near a school is often absurd in the holidays or evening.
A recent story suggested 80mph would be a safe and sensible limit on some motorway sections but it was unlikely to come in because of the public having accepted 70 as a reasonable limit. Some % of limits may well be related to safety considerations but others most certainly are not. It's hard to have respect for a law that is enforced in a partial and money making way.
