Caught Speeding 49 in a 30.

That used to be the case when speed limits were set appropriately and independently by traffic engineers rather than at a whim by anti-car councillors and councils who think it will get them votes. And yes there is mob rule by a minority out there. Recently had a road near me reduced from 40 to 30 based on a petition signed by a few hundred people and of course supported by a local councillor due for re-election soon.
People only stick to the speed limit when they think there's a chance of being caught. And considering that chance is very low and getting lower, speeding is becoming more widespread.
Of course it is more widespread when limits are reduced right left and centre for no good reason it brings the law into disrepute and people continue to drive at the speed limit that it was previously.0 -

Exactly!
In a friend of mine's village, a group lobbied the police (or whoever) to get a speed camera. In the end they agreed to have a mobile camera van visit the village every now and again. On its first day, the van caught the person who had lead the group doing 43mph.
It's like nimbyism. Speed limits are arbitrary and set too low just to catch out motorists so it's ok to break them - except outside my child's school where everyone should drive as slowly and carefully as possible and never park on double yellows.0 -
4 -6 points, all the sources seem to suggest. Its a category B offence.0

No, another poster misled by the press's reporting of the changes to sentencing guidelines at cases that reach court. 49 in a 30 the OP is extremely unlikely to end up in court and so is likely to receive a fixed penalty of £100 and 3pts.0 -

Thought not, how about Reginald on the community speed watch is he a Facebook friend?
My old sat nav actually did warn you about mobile cameras. It was very clever, pulled them from some RSS feed or something, which was in turn pulling them from Waze or some other open framework where people could input them. Had plenty of false positives (mobile camera ahead, no camera actually there) but many times it was absolutely spot on and there would be a camera.
Still, let's just not encourage speeding in a 30 and drive safely0 -
Speed limits aren't just about safety but also about noise and pollution.
What I find the saddest about people who speed, overtake whenever possible and so on is that it rarely benefits them anyway. How many times do these drivers get caught in a queue of slow traffic just ahead, or at the next set of lights? Speeding is not only anti-social (and illegal), it is by and large pointless!0 -

I agree with you on every point, but I just think it's sad that speeding isn't more actively discouraged.
The fact that speed cameras are bright yellow with signage warning of speed cameras, mobile camera vans being brightly coloured, technology warning of camera locations etc. and I'm surprised anyone actually gets caught speeding.
And the OP doing 49 in a 30 zone and all they're going to get is a £100 fine. £100! I spend more than that on dinner out. It's no deterrent. And the speed awareness course is seen as a joke.
Unlike drink driving and using a mobile phone, speeding is socially acceptable. In fact, in conversation when I mention that I don't speed, people either don't believe me or mock me for doing so.0 -

So as most of us assumed you were trolling earlier in the thread.
And you now expect anybody to take anything you post seriously.:rotfl:0 -
Speed limits aren't just about safety but also about noise and pollution.
Another fallacy. Firstly virtually all vehicles are quieter and less polluting than they were a decade ago, so by your logic that should lead to higher limits not lower ones. Secondly if you set up a pollution and noise monitoring station next to the road and I drove past at 30mph and then 60mph I can guarantee the total amount of noise and pollution picked up by your equipment at 30mph would be higher than that at 60mph for the simple reason I'd be in your vicinity for less time.0
