I'm always Jesus face palming, *shrug*0 -

I get it you want to be correct so whatever.
How far away from the lights though. You do realise we don't have a link to your dashcam don't you?
I will take my foot off the accelerator approaching a red light and hope that I can smoothly reapply it, if the lights change, thus less wear and tear on the car's parts.
It all depends if the lights only just changed to red, then in most cases there is no point coasting towards the line. If I see it as red as I approach then there's a good chance it will change as I approach.0 -

Normally though there are two induction loops and the first will be a good 20 metres from the lights (depending on speed limits, greater if limit is higher). This allows them to change in time for the car to pass without having to stop when no other traffic is present. So as long as they hit the first loop, it shouldn't matter if they then slow down.
You can pretty much always see the loops, darker patches of tarmac about 1cm thick. There's one near me that only has the loop in the right lane of a two lane road for some weird reason. If its quiet I do a little swerve to make sure I hit it. Anyone watching must think I'm trollied.0 -

Er, yeah, that's kind of the aim, but I'll agree with you - rolling 1 mile up a hill towards lights, to avoid making a hill start, is bad driving. Do you have a Google Maps link for this Santa Pod speedway local to you?!0
