Oh dear, I see the anti smoking brigade is out in force - again! As a smoker myself I feel for you.

I smoke in MY house, and MY garden, as is my right! When I visit my family who live in a rental, I smoke in the garden, as does my son in law, no complaints from their neighbours!

Do the anti smoking brigade drive vehicles? I personally find traffic fumes highly offensive, so could you all stop? No? thought not! Same with BBQs, could you all stop those too please?

Come on people, whatever happened to TOLERANCE?? Before you all start on about health risks etc., have a think about the damage traffic fumes cause to people.

Welcome to the new age when the smokers are the minority. Gone are the days when non-smokers were expected to TOLERATE the disgusting smell on every turn. One day, if you become an ex-smoker, you will realise how "nose blind" you have been all these years.

BBQs usually last a couple of hours 1-2 days a week, and if done properly most people are not finding the smell too offensive, nor is it harmful to other's health. Doesn't really compare with multiple times of day and night tobacco smoking.

Car exhaust analogy isn't much better either, not many neighbours are running their cars in their gardens.

Whilst it might be unpleasant, anyone can smoke in their own garden.

Many would relocate their smoking post if it meant keeping good neighbourly relations

Well of course anyone can smoke in their own garden, as long as I am not forced to smoke in my own bedroom.

From a legal perspective your bedroom is irrelevant.

You could build a small smoking shelter that would allow all year round smoking outside and keep the smoke in on the days wind blows in the wrong direction.

There are some very reasonable BBQ shelters that would do the job with slight modification.

I would if I could :rotfl: Usually I WALK :D if I need to go further afield I use my electric bike. Possibly once or twice a year I will go to my daughter's, which means a car journey :( her car, I don't own one.

Not at all, I just don't particularly want to stand on wet grass in my bare feet.

Get a pair of flip flops that you can leave outside.

I do think you can do what you like, of course. It is your garden and your right to smoke in it. But some consideration of others is good. Isn't it better to try to get along? I think people should be flexible where they can (whilst not being doormats of course) rather than always demanding to enforce what they perceive as their rights. This makes the world a nicer and less angry place.

It would cost you almost nothing (a couple of pounds to get a pair of cheap plastic shoes and the effort of walking another 10 feet onto your lawn) to make your neighbour happy, and you might want a favour from them in the future. Enjoy standing barefoot on the grass when it's dry.

(Not a smoker but my husband and neighbour both are. They both wear shoes to be able to stand far enough away from the houses for smoke to not be an issue.)

You do contribute to traffic fumes yourself then. Then there's the electricity to charge the battery of your e-bike, where does that come from? That's a rhetorical question. I'm just pointing out that your argument about traffic fumes isn't a very good one.

I don't leave my car idling for 10 mins at a time with its exhaust positioned directly outside my neighbour's bedroom window.

If we have a BBQ and I notice our neighbours have their washing out I knock on the door and let them know - they do the same for us. I also make sure I light the BBQ down the far end of the garden, this sometimes involves walking on wet grass but it's a sacrifice I am prepared to make as part of not being an ar*ehole neighbour.
