Smoking in garden

Thanks all for the slightly over the top berating of me asking a question, I consider myself well and truly told that I am the one in the wrong, I shall build a smoke proof bunker at the bottom of the garden and flagellate myself with barbed wire for being the most selfish person to walk the earth.0

Hopefully you'll now understand how much non-smokers hate second-hand smoke?
There have been a number of simple constructive suggestions, none of which involve building a bunker, but please go ahead with yours.0 -
My next door neighbour smokes out on their patio and it drifts into our bedroom and makes it stink. I hate it and think it's inconsiderate, I mentioned it but she still does it, clearly not a case of ignorance of the fact that smoke drifts, just inconsiderate. Now that you know that it drifts into her daughters room you have to decide what sort of person to be, it's your choice.0

Even if you only smoke a couple a night, you will have built up a tolerance to the smell and probably don't notice it on your clothes and hair.
For non-smokers, even just a few whiffs can be really strong and we're much more aware of how the smell clings to things.0 -

Alternatively you could just put a pair of shoes on and stand on the grass but whatever floats your boat.0 -

Appreciate that being shown up as a hypocrite ain't the best, but there's no need to thrown your toys out of the pram when you don't get the answer you wanted to hear. You asked, remember?
What you do with barbed wire in the privacy of your own home is entirely up to you, but a smoking shelter down the bottom of the garden, perhaps with a wall/side which diverts smoke away from blowing back into the houses around isn't a bad idea....0 -

Oh dear, I see the anti smoking brigade is out in force - again! As a smoker myself I feel for you.
I smoke in MY house, and MY garden, as is my right! When I visit my family who live in a rental, I smoke in the garden, as does my son in law, no complaints from their neighbours!
Do the anti smoking brigade drive vehicles? I personally find traffic fumes highly offensive, so could you all stop? No? thought not! Same with BBQs, could you all stop those too please?
Come on people, whatever happened to TOLERANCE?? Before you all start on about health risks etc., have a think about the damage traffic fumes cause to people.0 -
Not sure how asking a question makes me a hypocrite but thanks anyway. No toys being thrown here just a slightly surprised reaction to the vitriol being aimed at me. Anyway thanks again for taking the time to respond and I hope you have a wonderful day!0

I just don’t understand why you don’t understand that your neighbour not wanting the smoke in her daughters bedroom is just the same as you not wanting the smoke inside your house. You both feel the exact same way.
However, it is your choice to smoke so it should be you who suffers the smell and health consequences by smoking inside your house. Instead you have decided that rather you suffer from your choices, you will make a little girl suffer the smell and risk of lung cancer instead.0 -

Well as your question was about how we would all handle this situation here goes.
I would appreciate that my neighbour has politely pointed out that my cigarette smoke is drifting into the bedroom of her child. I would be slightly embarrassed as I hadn't realised and I would apologise to her. I would then make sure that I used a part of the garden as far away from her house as possible so that she could see I was making an effort. As my garden is mostly grass I would consider installing a small patio area at the point where I now smoke so that I could have a seat and a table. I might also put up a small gazebo type structure so that I could smoke if it was rainy. I wouldn't stop smoking in the garden (unless I decided to give up) but I would ensure that I did everything I could to mitigate smoke drift into my neighbours house. I'd probably send her a card at Christmas too and have general day to day chats when I bumped into her but hey get me, old-fashioned me, rubbing along with the people I live next to!0
