My insurance for a 18k car is £180 per year. Nothing wrong with insurance in this country. High risk drivers pay more. Duh!!

On the other hand I'll be dead before the OP as I'm an aging dinosaur who never sees other cars.

Brummie85 - I was with Aviva until February this year. I was with them for 2 years - paid about £230 in first year, then £235 in second year. (Far as I can remember). I went through them directly as recommended by a colleague. In Feb this year, they sent a renewal quote through of over £500 so I ditched them. Went through a couple of comparison sites, then happened to get an email at work reminding me that, as a Unison member, I get a discount with LV. Went to them direct via the Unison members site and paid £220 for this year. Probably took me about 3 hours in total.
I'm happy to stick with an insurer if their renewal quote is roughly what I'm already paying plus a few quid. Having said that, I haven't had a claim since 2000, so no reason it should go up much other than govt. levies. I just keep looking until I get a price I'm happy with , with a company I'm happy to use. I think the cheapest quote I got was with Hastings, but the customer service reviews were terrible, and LV seemed fine.

Or inflation, or changes to the risk rating of your postcode, car model, occupation, age, etc.
  • So many decent folk offering well meaning and constructive thoughts following Happy's somewhat provocative initial post.

And does he come back to acknowledge them? Does he billhooks.

Such a shame that all that time and trouble was expended. At least others reading the thread might pick up up snippets that'll be useful.

And as for Happy .... well maybe best keep my thoughts to myself.

Interesting thread. Lots of creative ideas.

How about improving the standard of driving? Everyone thinks they're a better than average driver. Surely the same people would welcome proving that fact, by having a retesting system like the USA.

But I don't think it will matter for long. Autonomous cars will wipe out human driving in short order, as quickly as smartphones were universally adopted, human driving will move to the fringes.

First step will probably be human-only lanes on motorways. Then everyone will give up self driving because the person in front won't let you get past, and the person behind is too impatient.

    ;)

    Cycle more? Drive less?
