pizza really is a big ripoff in terms of value for money.
Bit of dough, sprinkle of cheeze and voila ! £15 !!! - now that's profit!
how long do you have to work to earn that £15 (net) to pay for it ???
bad deal. - even at £6

money-go-round, why do you keep posting the same message on this thread?

You first posted it on 07-11-2007, 10:32 PM then again on 9-11-2007, 8:46 PM

Found out about this offer about 5.30 tonight ie the last day of the offer and rushed out to buy the times. It could not have come at a better time - my friends birthday is tuesday and there is five of us going to pizza express. I recently got made redundant and am pregnant (so job offers not exactly flooding in funnily enough!) so although I said I would go i was dreading spending so much of my jobseekers money on one night out. Sorted! Now I just have to broach the subject of not being able to split the bill five ways as we usually do (especially since I can't indulge in the wine now either!).... hopefully they will all understand, they all earnt twice what I did even when I did have a job......

..suggest you read the voucher carefully...as, although the most expensive meal is free, the offer says one voucher per table

If she only bought one Times, she will only have one voucher, and that is for herself. Don't see the problem.

  • Fair enough that people will always want something for free , but to suggest that you should go to a restaurant and ask for tap water to go with your meal is surely pushing the boundaries of cheapness and tackiness to another level ? First of all dining out should be considered as a special occassion , secondly its apparent that people who so often appear in said places with vouchers for a cheap meal , leave without tipping or showing any gratitude for the service they have received!!! Especially when considering the staff who have served them are on a minimum wage!!!! which probably still exists to supplement all the cheap people who seem to inhabit this world and think that people owe them something !!!!!!!! vouchers rule !!!!!!!! and so does tap water xxxxxxxx

    What's the deal?
Printed in The Times everyday this week (until Friday 9 Nov 07) is a Pizza Express voucher offering 2for1 adult main meals, excluding Fridays and Saturdays, before 29 November.

    A voucher with a difference
You have to applaud this voucher; one of the reasons I gave it such prominence in the weekly e-mail is because, unusually it is the more expensive of the two dishes that is free, so if at least one person orders the cheapest item on the menu - a margherita pizza for £5.50 - you'll get both meals for that price.
Thus two can dine for as little as £6.20 (£5.50 plus the 70p for The Times) in total, provided you order a tap water accompaniment.
    How to get your grub
Simply buy the newspaper for 70p, fill in the voucher details section and visit your nearest branch between Sunday and Thursday, before 29 November. Chose which main adult meal you fancy from the menu then hand over the voucher when ordering.
    Ts & Cs
    1. Valid until 29 Nov for dining on any day between Sunday and Thursday
    2. The voucher cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer
    3. Offer excludes extra toppings
    4. Not valid on take away orders
    5. Photocopies of the voucher are not valid
    6. One voucher per table

PS. This deal was originally spotted by MoneySaver Beate below. Thanks for the top spot! This post has been inserted to provide a researched and more detailed explanation for MoneySavers coming from the weekly e-mail.

I dont think a moneysaving site is for you
  • One thing I do agree with about that post is that dining in a restaurant is a special occasion. We eat out to try something we cannot cook at home, or to sample a different ambience, or celebrate something special. Its not all about getting as cheap a deal as possible, although we all like a bargain here. I would like to know if a Gary Rhodes restaurant has a special offer, as well as a pizza chain. I also pay more for quality ingredients, and good service - that applies more widely that just restaurants. I'm a pretty good cook, and know that fresh quality food costs. If I wanted to eat as cheaply as possible I would never dine out.

Sweeping generalisations are unpleasant but being a money saver does not mean being cheap and does not imply a lack of generosity.

I always ask for tap water, as I regard bottled water as a rip off. If a restaurant does not offer tap water I will quite happily walk out. In fact I have done. Even swanky diners are given iced tap water in the US as a matter of course. Much better to save the money towards a glass of wine, albeit often a small one.

    Cheers

I like Pizza Express for the quality of food and the good service you generally get. I quite happily have a starter and a desert and I don't like tap water, but that's personal preference, not trying to be posh. I always tip too. Nevertheless, when such an offer like this comes along, I grab it because I like going there anyway, and it means about £8 off the bill. But I can also understand people who are strapped for cash and who do anything to get a meal as cheaply as possible while still having the experience of dining out. If that means just having a main course and tap water, so be it. It does not make a difference to the waiter what kind of beverage you order, and I would say that Pizza Express get enough custom from this offer not to lose out.

Strada, a smaller pizza chain, mainly in London, gives free cold bottled filtered tap water. If only all restaurants did the same.

The Pizza Express offer may well have something to do with the success the competition are having, certainly in London, despite the fact the pizzas from 'Express are excellent.
