The idea that you make a long term enemy from a close neighbour with nuclear capability would just bolster this paranoia

In case we go full North Korea?

I'm not sure we'd be any nuclear threat to the EU; without Euratom we can't buy material, and with French owned power stations we can't refine it.
We'd also never nuke our own doorstep and we're not the only nuclear power in Europe.

Are we still using French aircraft carriers too?

Or do you honestly think the EU will dissolve the EU project because it's scared of our underfunded military and a potential future despot?

Let's be realistic. A bad deal means we'll shout about being screwed over for a few months before common sense prevails and we rejoin.

In what way have I insulted 52% of those who voted to leave?

    Post 532. Last line.

How authoritarian of you. It's this notion that we should all have the same values when it came to Brexit. I fully accept that people approached the subject with different priorities.

There's no need to insult my son.

He is unlikely to be able to work in the EU unless freedom of movement continues. If companies decide that they are better off being based in the EU then they will move.

Nonsense. There have always been opportunities to work in Europe and there always will be.

My group of ten uni friends were saying something along the same lines as you posted. Of them 3 have lived and worked in Africa in various countries, one has lived and worked in Canada, and another is moving to Aus next year. None of them have lived and worked in Europe.

So it's pretty obvious that a. there are the opportunities to work anywhere and b. the EU is not the be all and end all.

    It's just brainwashing really.

It's entirely possible, but the politicians would really have to consult the public once again.

Being realistic is interesting. Truthfully, I think it is getting more difficult to predict the future trends.

We could even move much closer to the USA. Certainly, I think I can trace more of my income to American companies. So much of the business in the UK has elements of American companies within it.

American companies are absolutely eyeing up a very lucrative market should the NHS be opened up.

You've got me banged to rights apart from the minor detail that that post wasn't made by me.

Indeed you are right. My apologies. :o:o

I do understand the tensions though. One thing which disappoints me since the vote is the lack of any effort by the government to really try and understand the differences in voting around the country.

How could we arrive at a solution which suits all without reconciling our own differences?

On the subject of your son, why shouldn't talented people still work in Europe? It might be more difficult, but it's not like we didn't have solutions before EU membership.

This government doesn't appear to have decided what it wants out of Brexit as yet. We've had the classics like 'Brexit means Brexit' & 'Red White & Blue Brexit' but they don't actually mean anything. May is a dreadful PM and I do feel that she's only in that position because those around her do not want to take control until after we've left the EU.

I don't see anything coming out of this government that'll make Brexit work for us. Labour should be seizing the initiative at this point but they're just as bad.

I think that it'll take a minor miracle for more than about 15% of the population of the UK to be happy with the final outcome because of the disunity of the government and strength of the EU.

Opportunities for school leavers next year is all up in the air. What level of FOM will we have? Will there continue to be cross border science/medicine/whatever bodies? Will overseas manufacturers continue to consider the UK a good place to be based?

Note that I'm not saying that it will all be bad; I'm simply saying that it could be and I don't see any valid reasons to think that things will be better because I simply don't buy the Leave line.

Most people would consider it an insult to say that if you failed you wouldn't have the gumption to take the blame yourself but would look for a scapegoat.

In my experience a great many people do look to blame others for their failures instead of looking in the mirror for the true reason.

I wish your son well and hope that he will make the most of his opportunities but it was you who linked him with Brexit.
