This is the thing that amuses me the EU is best thing since sliced bread, but if one member decides it's not for them they must be punished to discourage other members leaving.

    Where is this punishment?

The UK running itself off the cliff isn't the EU punishing it, it's the UK running itself off a cliff. It's entirely self inflicted and it's not up to the EU to prevent us hurting ourselves.

We know what our options are, yet we're still unwilling to choose one and get somewhere with negotiations.

What is the EU's negotiating position? Other than say no to anything suggested.

Annexation of NI is non negotiable. A fully understandable position.

Seems as if making an example of the UK is key. Given the differing views across Europe.

The options for the UK remain pretty much the same as they have been for a fair while.

    No deal
Canada style deal with agreement on permanent backstop for Northern Ireland Broder
    EEA style deal
    Remaining after a second ref.

For all of the fervour around the backstop for the NI border any polling I have seen suggests a majority of the people in NI are fine with it, obviously the more hardline unionists aren't however.

A lot of people are saying that we are being treated harshly to discourage other states from leaving if it's so good they shouldn't have to.

A lot of people say a lot of things about Brexit it doesn't mean there is much truth in them!

It's a pretty bog standard negotiation between the EU and a country outside of the EU as far as I can see, the only additional serious complicating factor really is the NI border

The EU has been very consistent in its position since the day of the Brexit vote: No cherry-picking.

The EU’s main foundation is the indivisibility of the four freedoms - the free movement of goods, capital, services and labour.

Chequers is cherry-picking as it pretends we can have free movement of goods + partial free movement on capital while opting out of the other 2 freedoms.

And yet they wish to cherry pick, they want to keep hold of our security assistance, they went into a right panic when we threatened to withdraw it.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

Theresa May making Brexit statement at No 10 confirming she's still living in lala land.

Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

What amuses me is the idea that losing the benefits of EU membership is viewed as “punishment” by those who never recognised those benefits in the first place!

But is there any evidence of this?

People said they needed us more than we needed them, that BMW would make them give us everything we want, that the world is flat, and that Elvis isn't really dead.

From all I can see, the EU is giving us literally everything we asked for - we've gone from being treated as an integral member with all the perks that involves, to a 3rd party with none of the perks of membership. That's punishing, but it's not the EU that's doing it to punish us.

It's like us shooting ourself in the foot and blaming the EU for letting us.

Last time I checked, it looked like UK decided to leave EU and not that EU decided that UK should leave, so why does May think they should do her government's work for her?
