The wagon was in the RH turn lane because the only way he can get round the junction is to take the entire road up.

The cyclist was invisible to him because she was probably fairly well hidden by the van - which could only pass her because she was riding in the gutter. And why did she not look around her at any stage? She would have heard the wagon, surely...

The wagon may need to use that lane to turn left but he should have been checking properly as he's crossing a lane where other road users wouldn't expect it. If he had slowed properly before turning he would have had more time to check and the cyclist is likely to have questioned the wagons road position and speed.
Would be interesting to hear the wagon drivers thoughts after viewing the video.

Around schools sure but all over, I don't agree to 20mph

So 30 isn't a minimum then? The main road past my house is a 20. (we are in a dead end road so can only enter/leave by that road)Its about 1/4 mile from the primary school, but many kids live on the other side of that road. So you feel 20 past a school is fine? (I would say its too fast) but those same kids are fine just up the road crossing the main road?

How many buildings do you want to compulsarily purchase and demolish?
Why change the environment to suit the vehicles, why not change the vehicles to suit the environment?

I really had hoped this wasn't up for debate and blaming someone who was nearly killed, however I was probably naive in that hope.
    Nice snippage.

You forgot to quote this bit.
It's the usual story that either of the two could have averted it with a bit more alertness. Fortunately, the camera cyclist was there and shouted, and fortunately the truck driver heard him.

It's frightening how resigned people are to this.
We could easily have vehicles designed with visibility and human safety in mind, alongside tech such as cameras, object detection etc.
Instead we accept blindspots and poor road layout/design

Just pause and look at the wagon...

It's a big rigid four-axle DAF CF. A quick look at DAF's website says that axle config starts at 32t MAM, which is the absolute max legal weight for a rigid in the UK. Nobody operates those lightly. It's fitted with a flatbed body with a ramp, empty. Sure, you can't quite read the operator's name on it - but what can we take a bloody good guess at so far from that? That it's going to collect some rather large and heavy non-road-legal equipment from somewhere, probably from a building site. My guess'd be a big digger. How do you think that is going to get shifted otherwise?

This is in central London, so they're operating according to TfL's approval schemes - the tightest in the country.

It may be unavoidably large but removing blind spots by whatever means would help.

Its clearly a tight fit on those roads but I expect something even larger could fit if driven appropriately and safely.

Do you have a link to that?
I can't copy a link on this wretched tablet, but if you go to the ROSPA website there's a pretty good explanation. The key thing is that a 20 zone is different from a 20 limit.

    .

The size of the wagon is immaterial. Stop trying to blame the cyclist: she was, in nautical terms, the stand on vessel. She was overtaken and then left hooked. Although I am aware of overtaking vehicles when I cycle (and drive, come to think of it) and expect the unexpected, I shouldn't have to brake in those circumstances.

But the situation is exactly why cyclists constantly have to come on here and explain why they take primary position on the road, in spite of the criticism they get from less aware motorists.

Umm, what's that got to do with 20 limits?.

Nothing, but you've taken the bait and helped to successfully de-rail the thread.

Minimum? So what speed do you suggest for around schools?

30mph (or faster in some locations I can think of) like it has been from the year dot. Are kids now more irresponsible than they were a generation or two ago? Or has road safety education gone out of the window to be replaced by propaganda about the vulnerable road user and the evil motor vehicle?
